Fancy fitting a few days of fuss-free fishing into your hols? Moncoutant’s Natura Resort-Pescalis has things sorted for those who do: the 100-hectare lake here caters for both experienced anglers seeking record hauls and beginners who’d like to hone their skills. A fishing shop on site sells and rents top-quality kit, and there are kids’ fishing activities in summer. If you’re not into fishing, that huge lake is a fab place for a chilled-out day of wildlife-spotting, a viewsome picnic or a leisurely walk or bike ride through the shoreside woods. It’s also in a pretty fab location for visiting some of the area’s top attractions: Puy du Fou theme park and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Natural Regional Park are both around 40 minutes away by car, and you’re just a few minutes away from an aquarium, an adventure park and a couple of castles. There’s plenty to keep you amused on site, too, including a heated open-air swimming pool and paddling pool, a tennis court, pétanque court, table tennis and multisports court. Tiddlers can clamber and swing at the playground while their parents supervise from thoughtfully placed benches. The on-site restaurant Les Délices de Pescalis is open six days a week for traditional meals; more restaurants are five minutes’ drive away in Moncoutant, along with a supermarket, bakeries and other shops.

If you’ve got small sorts in tow, Puy du Fou is the area’s major attraction – the history-themed park has previously been voted the best theme park in the world (high praise indeed). Before setting off on the 40-minute journey, have a chat with the folks on site for details of how to buy tickets in advance. Those who seek fresh air and wildlife should do well at the Marais Poitevin Natural Regional Park, also around a 40-minute drive from the site. Birdwatching, boat trips, bike rides, canoeing and horse-drawn carriage rides are among the fave activities around the country’s second largest wetland area. A little closer to home, there’s an aquarium (with kid-friendly touch pool) a few minutes’ walk from the site, and an adventure park with treetop trails, ziplines and laser games a few minutes’ drive away. Natur’Zoo and the 14th-century Château de Saint Mesmin are both within a half-hour drive as well.
