What a championly smashing setting… Camping Les Charmilles near the Haute-Savoie commune of Vallières is set up for all sorts. It's in the countryside 300 metres above sea level for mountainy hikes; between the lakes of Aix-les-Bains, Geneva and Annecy for watersports amid spectacular scenery, and right on the Camino de Santiago or St James's Way, the famed pilgrimage route taken in days of yore that's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And yet more, if less famously: Les Charmilles also has a river half a kilometre away for fishing, and – how champion – the Chabert cheese factory across its entrance for factory tours and tastings available gratis to Charmilles guests. Welcoming pilgrims as well as holidaymakers, Les Charmilles is a family-friendly site with a wide range of facilities including a heated summer pool and a paddling pool, surrounded by sunbeds and parasols for sunbathing by the water. A bar and restaurant at the entrance of the site serves Savoyard dishes, cheese, wine and pizza from its varied menu, to eat in or take away. Entertainment is regularly organised during the summer school holidays, such as welcome drinks, raffles, cooking contests with the restaurant chef, pétanque and art competitions and karaoke and disco nights. A bakery, butcher, hairdresser, dentist, grocery store, doctor and pharmacy, post office and more are all within half a kilometre's walk.

There's absolutely loads to do among mountain, countryside and water around here, whether you want to stay close to site or drive a short distance elsewhere. A fishing river is 500 metres away. You can also fish for carp, pike and rainbow trout in the Chéran river at Rumilly, ten minutes away, or go canyoning or kayaking on the waters here or at the nearby river of Fier. France's third biggest lake, Annecy, is within 30 minutes' drive, as are the huge glacial waters of Bourget lake at the famed spa town of Aix-les-Bains. From Aix-les-Bains, it's about ten kilometres south to the Savoie capital of Chambéry, with thirteenth century Château de Chambéry and the famed Elephants Fountain. For cyclists, over 250 kilometres of marked trails are around for all levels; the nearby cycling school arranges trips all year round supervised by experienced instructors. Mountain biking and horse riding are also available nearby. Finally, the Camping Les Charmilles team particularly recommends a trip to the winter sports and skiing destination of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps at 4,808 metres.
