Mount Etna – truly one of Europe’s most spectacular sights, especially when it’s putting on one of its fiery lava shows. So it makes sense to take in volcano views from plenty of different angles, no? Settle in at Agricampeggio Contrada Friera, between the small Sicily villages of Piedimonte Etneo and Linguaglossa, and you can start by snapping pics of the volcanic outlook from 10 kilometres away. You’ll be wanting to take a closer look at the lunar-like landscape too, no doubt, so set forth on the hour-long drive to the mount for hiking, climbing, caving or jeep tours (or skiing, if you’ve swung by in snow season). Clearly the volcano is the main attention-seeker around these parts but it’s far from the only attraction that’s easily accessed from Contrada Friera: Taormina and Catania around both within a 45-minute drive too, and you can hit the beach in about 20 minutes. Wherever you choose to roam by day, you’ll come back to quiet pitches surrounded by peaceful orchards and woods. Central to the site is a small traditional stone house, which guests are welcome to use for a bit of respite from the Sicilian summer sun, or a warming evening by the fire on chillier nights. There’s a kitchenette in the house for prepping your meals; outside is an outdoor cooking area with barbecue and picnic tables, and a playground for keeping kids entertained.

Mighty Etna’s bound to eat up a good chunk of your time in this area – once you’re done with admiring it from afar, get a little closer with a looping train ride on the scenic Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway (20 minutes away) or take the hour-long drive down to the mount itself. Active types can scramble around the slopes on hiking/climbing trails or jeep/quad bike/mountain bike tours; those who’d like to preserve a bit more energy may like to glide gracefully up in a cable car instead. If Etna-based excursions haven’t worn you out, there’s more activity to be had in the Alcantara River Park, 35 minutes away and a fab area for walks, watersports and canyoning. It’s certainly worth conserving some energy for a trip to the ancient theatre in Taormina (35 minutes away) and walks around Catania (45 minutes), taking in its famed castle, cathedral and elephant-shaped fountain. Relaxation-seekers, fret not: a mere 20 minutes’ drive separates you from flopping on Aurora beach. It’s also worth noting that the fertile volcanic soil around here is being put to good use in vine-growing, so you can take a tippling tour around local wineries to pick a fave or few for your evening sippage.
