  • Small family-run site on a working farm in a small Derbyshire village
  • Peak District location, 15 minutes’ drive from the Monsal Trail
  • Footpaths from the site or village; a five-minute drive to six pubs
Longing for a peaceful hiking holiday in the Peak District National Park? What a position Hobson Farm will put you in for trails over the countryside, old railway lines, dales, moors and tors. That’s right – this small, family-run site is just 15 minutes’ drive from the Monsal Trail and 25 minutes from the High Peak Trail (two hot hiking destinations in the pretty Peak District). Hobson Farm is based in the small Derbyshire village of Flagg, which the Limestone Way passes through. The Midshires Way's bridleways are around half an hour's walk away… and if that’s not enough to get you started with, Lathkill Dale is an hour and 20 minutes’ hike away. First, you’ll probably want to top up your flasks with fresh water (there's a shared tap between every two pitches). The site also has an outdoor toilet with a wash basin, and an Elsan point to get rid of any campervan waste. The field itself is flat and has good drainage, sandwiched between two working farms and set back off the road with bushes at either end. There may not be a pub in the nearest village, but you’ll be well placed for a tour of the local watering holes, because there are six pubs within five minutes’ drive of Hobson Farm. Two are easy enough to get to on foot, one being 35 minutes’ walk away in Monyash and another in Hurdlow (45 minutes’ walk). If you’re already scheming and plotting out what walks might be on the agenda, other top picks (aside from those direct from the site) include the rocky landscape of The Roaches (25 minutes), the moors of Kinder Scout (45 minutes) and the 517-metre-high Mam Tor (half an hour).

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved how close you were to a working farm, with chickens roaming around the pitches. Perfect spot if staying for a few nights. The owner was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble, like having to pull our motor home out the grass with a tractor due to sinking into the grass.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Absolutely lovely stay. The country setting was lovely and the site very clean and tidy. On an even more positive note the toilet was a proper outside toilet - not a portable one as advertised! Would highly recommend. Some noise early on from the working farm setting but didn't bother us as wake early.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely little camp site. We camped in a tent with a hook up electric. There was a water tap on every hook up and plenty of space between campers. The grass was amazing and the site was very well maintained. There was a toilet near the farm house that was a little run down but very clean. There were no other cleaning facilities but it does state this in the booking description. We would stay on the site again, only downside was no village pub, the nearest was a good walk away but we managed.

Local attractions

How do you like your hikes? With a waterfall and moorland views, like the landscape at Kinder Scout (45 minutes' drive)? Across a gritstone viewpoint where rock climbers often scale the crags, like Stanage Edge (half an hour)? Perhaps you’d rather a shorter stroll, broken up with picnics in the peaceful grounds of Chatsworth House (20 minutes), a 17th-century mansion with its own farmyard and adventure playground. The towns of Bakewell (10 minutes), Ashbourne (25 minutes) or Buxton (15 minutes) will slow down the pace too, with plenty of places to stop for a Bakewell tart or another tasty bite to eat. You’ll be going underground in search of limestone caverns with stalactites and fossils at Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes). Haddon Hall (20 minutes) is a different world entirely – a Tudor hall with Elizabethan gardens.
