  • Well-maintained Herefordshire campsite with lovely Golden Valley views
  • A 20-minute drive to Hay-on-Wye and Black Mountains
  • Part of a working farm with restaurant and cider mill on site
The part of Herefordshire that’s close to the England/Wales border is a particularly fine area for an outdoor break – it puts you within easy reach of days wandering around Hereford, poking around the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, paddling down the River Wye or hiking through the Black Mountains. If that sounds enticing enough, how about a place to stay that’s got not only its own restaurant but also a traditional cider mill? That’s the tempting offer at Gwatkin Red Cow Campsite, a well-maintained site with lovely views across the area known as the Golden Valley. Settle in for a stay here and you can fill your days with all sorts of adventures before getting back to a shower, a fresh pint of award-winning cider and a meal in the restaurant, which serves up a range of home-cooked dishes to hungry travellers. Handily, it’s also open for cooked breakfasts, lunches (including an excellent Sunday roast) and afternoon pick-me-ups with coffee and cake. At times when the restaurant isn’t open, you’ve got the option of getting your barbecue going; there’s a butcher 10 minutes’ drive away for top-notch local meat, or a couple of supermarkets 20 minutes away in Hereford. And of course you can still wash it down with a couple of bottles of cider from the shop on site… Things have been kept fairly simple on the pitches here, but you’ll have access to toilets and showers, and are welcome to bring dogs along to join your break.

Liked: It was basic but great. The farm animals were beautiful. The site is small and compact with few level spaces on the field however its a park up wherever type space which is good for campervans. The restaurant on site was so delicious! The cider selection was vast and well priced.

Disliked: Only nit-picking, the toilet facilities are away from the campsite which made nightime runs entertaining!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely camping field on a site located on a working farm, away from the main road so very quiet. There are toilets and showers on site with a brand new shower block (almost finished when we stayed) surrounded by orchards and livestock, with walks through the fields and rivers nearby. A restaurant is also on site with a shop selling drinks, snacks, cakes, and Gwatkin own home brewed small batch cider with the option to taste a small sample of any you like before you buy. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful, nothing is too much bother and they are very accommodating. There is a small collection of wild fowl and orphaned cows and sheep on the site and the site owners are quite happy to talk about their animals and the farm. Dogs are welcome and if they have good recall probably fine to be loose although if they are a bit over friendly best kept on a lead.

Disliked: Not really a “dislike” but it’s worth remembering that this is a working farm. For our stay over a weekend it was mostly quiet, but when looking after animals, remember the working day starts at dawn!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic restaurant and farm shop. Owner was extremely relaxed given we had made some alterations to the booking etc. Toilets/showers all very clean. Good walks from site.

Disliked: Nothing much - be aware it is a working farm so some noisy animals! But actually very authentic for that.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great little site, nice and quiet. Produce their own cider that's brilliant. Cracking little restaurant too.

Disliked: Could do with a better toilet and shower block. But it's not a major issue ans the one's provided were clear and functional

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: One of the loveliest campsites we have stayed at - gorgeous setting and really helpful staff. Especially loved the resident animals! We cannot wait to return and stay here again and bring the children next time. Cannot recommend the rhubarb cider and biscoff slices enough - worth the 3 hour drive just for those alone!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely, friendly and quiet site. Clean toilets and showers. Great cider and lovely restaurant on site.

Disliked: Washing up is fairly basic but functional. If busy, the site is not that flat so May be hard to find a flat pitch.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Able to select own pitch. Direct access to restaurant with a good breakfast and dinner available. Animals to see which the children enjoyed. Covered area in front of barn with a few picnic tables.

Disliked: Lots of areas for possible improvement, cleaning the showers (only 2 available) and they need a small shelf/stool so your not putting your clothing etc on muddy and dusty floor. Grass in camping field really needs cutting! Lots of mess and hazards around farm area which is the access route through to the facilities so tricky with small children especially when dark. One washing up sink for whole campsite which was very low down and very difficult to use (also surrounded by clutter/rubbish and needs cleaning) Recycling/rubbish bins shared with restaurant and overfull when we arrived and for the whole stay.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Liked:- Ciders and Perrys Working farm Stunning valley to be in Great restaurant food Good cafe Informal pitches ie just a field

Disliked: Could be better:- Cafe options during the day better cakes and lunch options could be available all day, but plenty of local options. Vege cooked too softly for modern tastes, try to offer al dente? They’re new at this so will improve pitches and services over time. Need branding and marketing advice, all a little bit confused.

Local attractions

Walking is a real treat around here – favourite spots nearby include the Cat’s Back (half an hour’s drive) and Hay Bluff (35 minutes), as well as the hour-long walk from the site to Dore Abbey. For other outdoor activities, try canoeing from Symonds Yat (35 minutes), horse riding/pony trekking with Noakes Farm Riding Centre (50 minutes) or go-karting at Herefordshire Raceway (half an hour). For something a little less strenuous, take walks around National Trust site The Weir Garden and Brobury House Gardens (both 20 minutes), or sign up for a llama trekking experience with Golden Valley Llamas (10 minutes). A day spent exploring the many bookshops of Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes) is usually a good idea too, as is one wandering around the city of Hereford (25 minutes), taking in the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Black and White Museum – and maybe also the Museum of Cider?
