  • Peaceful eco-friendly site in the Herefordshire hills
  • Wye Valley, Black Mountains, Forest of Dean within 50 minutes' drive
  • Communal kitchen, campfire and yurt; five minutes from pub with food
Deerheart... it's the sort of name that belongs on the big screen. It’s the sort of place that belongs there too, or at least, playing a big part in your next holiday. In lush green fields near the Welsh border, Deerheart is eco-friendly, family-friendly, dog-friendly, friendly all round. With the Wye Valley on one side and the Black Mountains on the other, you’ll get cracking views wherever you stay on this spacious Herefordshire site and protecting them is a big part of what they do here. Composting toilets and rainfall-style showers (with steamy hot water, not real rainwater…) give visitors what they need whilst being kind to the environment; keeping energy consumption down, there’s no outdoor lighting at night so bring torches and make sure to look up at the night sky. You can keep perishables in a communal fridge (labels provided… they think of everything) and alongside barbecues and campfires you can also whip up alfresco feasts in the kitchen, which has a sink, industrial-sized gas hob and electricity points. You’ll want to be outdoors as much as poss but when the weather’s putting its foot down, the massive communal yurt can accommodate the most sizeable tribes and keep them warm with its woodburning stove. For outside pow-wows, there’s a communal campfire with benches; your kind-hearted hosts will provide wood to get it going and you can purchase more when you need. There's a pub with food five minutes' drive away and it's half an hour to shops and supermarkets in Ross-on-Wye.

Local attractions

For walks close to base, follow the Deerheart Trail through the nearby woodlands and meadows, or take a 10-minute drive to Kentchurch Court to wander the elegant gardens of this Jacobean country pile. If you’re more into craggy castles, you’ve hit the jackpot, with Grosmont, Skenfrith, Goodrich and Monmouth castles all between 10 minutes’ and half an hour’s drive away; if you’re into big walks, you can bag a trio of castles in one 19-mile circuit, or join the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke Path in Monmouth. It’s half an hour to Symonds Yat for rock climbing and walks through the Wye valley, and about 50 minutes to the peaks and crags of the Black Mountains. Kayak your way down the Wye from Monmouth or head to Llangorse lake (45 minutes) for watersports and fishing. Perrygrove, about the same distance away, has great larks on its miniature railway and treetop adventure trail, and to go deep down below, you can explore the caves and former iron mines at Clearwell (50 minutes). A similar distance away in the Forest of Dean, Puzzlewood ia a woodland labyrinth of pathways and hidden wonders.
