  • Luxurious romantic couples’ hideaway on the Welsh and English border
  • A 25-minute drive to Hereford and half an hour to Symonds Yat
  • Outdoor bath with mountain views; cinema screen and cider tastings
Don’t know whether to plump for Wales or England as a base for a romantic mini-break? You don’t have to make any decisions at Ty Gwyn Holidays, as it sits on the border of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, with views of the Black Mountains. A lovely little bolthole for a couple or solo adventurer, Ty Gwyn Holidays is a private complex where you'll be staying in a cosy cabin decked out with a double mezzanine bed (with seating and storage underneath), a sink and a woodburning stove to keep you toasty warm. Opposite is the amenities block, with a separate compost loo and power shower, plus a kitchen equipped with a hob, microwave, fridge and useful bits like glasses and crockery. Bedding and towels are provided. Outside, there’s a chillout area with seating and a table, plus a firepit and barbecue so you can cook up a feast and revel in your solitude (there’s a choice of pubs within 10 minutes’ drive though, if you fancy a change of scenery). In case you’re at a loose end, there’s also a dartboard and cinema screen, plus a vast alfresco bath (with room for two, mountain views and a plentiful supply of hot water). Ty Gwyn Holidays is on a family-run farm, where Alex makes award-winning cider and perry. Once on site, you can book tours of the cider-making process and tastings, and claim discounts on cider purchases.

Cider Shack cabin

Liked: Private, cozy, clean and a warm welcome. Also a beautiful night sky perfect if you are looking for pictures of the Milky Way or the Aurora. The bath tube is divine!

Disliked: I was not 100% sold on the compost toilet but got used to it. Husband loves it though.

Cider Shack cabin

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at the cider shack over the august bank holiday. When we arrived, Laura came to greet us and told us any useful information. All the facilities were really clean. The bath was my favourite part of staying here, it was so relaxing under the stars at night time. The toilet is a compost loo but there is a normal toilet on site as well if you’d prefer that.

Disliked: The only problem was that the seating for the outdoor cinema was slightly uncomfortable so we didn’t end up using it all that much. Some outdoor beanbags might be a comfier option.

From the manager: Thank you for coming to stay with us. We value your feedback. Sorry we were unable to accommodate your son on the second night which you requested during your stay. The Cider Shack was designed to accommodate up to two adults and has been marketed and insured on this basis. There are three seating options for the cinema, the cushioned bench, bistro chairs or deck chairs. I will look to see if I can find bean bags that are washable and durable for the outdoor space, thank you.

Quite and romantic. Loved the view and the friendly dogs! Also great shower!…
