  • Large peaceful parkland site 12 miles from central London
  • Café, playgrounds and barbecue rental
  • Activities on site including nature walks and animal feeding
City slickers – if you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, it's likely that you'll find the setting of Elstree's Aldenham Country Park magic. The wild camping pitches at this peaceful park are less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another excellent aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a great option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.) Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks and animal feeding among the activities for guests. Kids can also search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include cycle rides on woodland trails. The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

Liked: The open camping field has a beautiful meadow next to it and is surrounded by hedges. Camping mid-week it was quiet (6 or so others, but lots of space) with the occasional wild bunny appearance. Definitely get the farm and adventure playground add-on for your stay (you need an adult one too and have to accompany them). It means you can go anytime and the farm is just amazing - lots to see, accessible, SEN-friendly. The playground is good too, though more for under 10s. You can have an open fire on the ground, though do need to purchase the right to a fire and wood from the campsite (the initial package includes kindling and fire-starter). They come round a few times a day to make sure you have what you need.

Disliked: The camping is pretty basic for the price and if you want to camp under a tree, you may need to pay a premium. The four washing up stations are cold-water only and don't have any shade. We were lucky, but on a full summer day it would be baking. The toilets are port-a-potties with pump-action flush and no lights at night. There are showers but both these and the toilets aren't on a level base, so don't quite work as expected. There are though nicer toilets nearer the farm, but it's too much of a trek for regular visits. They are open that on a weekday there isn't anyone on the farm at nights should there be an issue - and that also means not nearby. Though to their credit they will make every effort to resolve an issue to everyone's satisfaction.

Liked: Location was lovely, friendly staff, farm was a hit with the children. We had a small problem during our stay and the staff sorted this the next day and made sure we were comfortable and happy for the remainder of our stay.

Disliked: Portaloo toilets. Sometimes these were dirty and smelly. No staff after 5pm in the week.
