  • Small and secluded site close to the Leicestershire-Rutland border
  • On the outskirts of Beeby, half an hour's drive from Rutland Water
  • Two coarse fishing lakes; opposite a bus stop
Nature sure can be colourful, as proved by Purple Badger Camping and Fishing Lakes in Leicestershire. This small and secluded site is tucked away on the edge of the village of Beeby, a peaceful patch close to the border with Rutland. Edged by wildflowers and trees, the site's various accommodation options – many of which are named after well-known fictional badgers – are spread around its spacious main field. This splendid selection of setts is a short walk from two communal areas, one of which has a washing-up zone, a fridge freezer and drinking water. The fact that cars aren't allowed in the field means that kids can roam free (there are wheelbarrows on hand to help you lug your kit from A to B). Wherever you're staying, Purple Badger Camping and Fishing Lakes will set aside a private area where you can perch on logs and light up fires and barbecues. People have been angling here for over 40 years, and it's clear why business has never dried up – the site's two lakes have great views and are well-stocked with carp, roach, tench and other classic coarse fishing catches. A coffee cart serves up hot drinks, sandwiches and other snacks on weekend mornings and every day in summer – whether you're an angler or an onlooker, head on down and get your fill. Delicious woodfired pizzas are available in the evenings on site during the summer on most Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays (to be booked in advance). Purple Badger Camping and Fishing Lakes is directly opposite a bus stop that can link you up with Melton Mowbray or Syston. Head to the latter (10 minutes' drive) to stock up at the nearest supermarket.

Liked: As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with lovely smiles and a warm welcomes and super flexibility as we turned up hours before check-in but we were made to feel like it was no problem at all. Lovely quiet and well thought through layout. Really nice site and all the facilities were top notch. Lovely rustic feel and the coffee and sandwich hut was delightful. I would whole heartedly recommend this place....

Local attractions

Linger a while in Leicester (20 minutes' drive), where the remains of King Richard III were discovered in 2012. The much-maligned monarch may have long had a bad rap (thanks for nothing, Shakespeare), but you can get closer to the real Richard at a well-presented visitor centre that has popped up where he was found. A short walk away at Leicester Cathedral you can also admire his kingly crypt and some grand Gothic architecture. For rural rambles, meanwhile, head out east to Rutland Water and its nature reserve (30 minutes' drive), or zip down to Melton Country Park (30 minutes) for 137 acres of brilliant breathing space. While you're up that way, take the kids for a tour of Twinlakes Park (30 minutes), where there are fab falconry shows and log flumes to ride. For more stops on a tiddler-pleasing itinerary, look to the nearby National Space Centre (20 minutes) or Twycross Zoo (50 minutes).
