  • Luxury glamping site on an alpaca farm by the Midshires Way
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Rutland Water
  • Adults-only site a mile from East Leake; pub 15 minutes' walk away
As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end. And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet. Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area. Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm. When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: A fully serviced pitch is so much better than having to break out the aquaroll and wastemaster. You're treated to some beautiful sunsets. The facilities block is small but very well equipped with 2 unisex bathrooms containing a shower toilet and basin and a pot washing sink and a washing machine and tumble dryer. It's finished to a high standard in a log cabin style and immaculate. The alpacas are very cute. The 4g signal is good as is the site's own wifi, and you can get a tv signal. East Leake village is easily walkable and has all you might need in the way of shops, restaurants, pubs and takeaways.

Disliked: Not personally keen on the blue slate pathway to the facilities block as it's a bit rough to walk on in sandles. The site is on the final approach to East Midlands airport so you will have planes coming over which didn't bother us. I wore earplugs at night and wasn't disturbed.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Freindly welcome, well organised reception. P&Q In nature. Exceptionally clean and tidy site and facilities. Dogs exercise field is very big, best dog walking facility yet. Yes it was muddy but that's due to the weather we have had. Lovely to let her off the lead and run free safely. Close to multiple pubs.

Disliked: Drive full of potholes. Building work adjoined to site. But didn't bother us as it was a BH. WiFi kept dropping out.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Nice site, quite, excellent pub in village. Really nice toilets. Site owner nice and helpful, wants to keep site nice.

Disliked: Don't think there's enough toilets on site. Uneven ground and sort of slate gravel going to toilets, not suitable for disabled. We was on grass pitches which was water logged, not owners fault. But helped us off, no problem.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Location was on very quiet farm land, & the horses and alpacas were lovely around the site! The toilet/showers are wonderful, spacious, clean & quite luxuriously appointed! It's well situated next to lovely villages, with great access to many towns & cities in East Midlands. We would happily have stayed longer, & were quite sorry to leave.

Disliked: Not a lot to add negatively, - just a few minor points: The reception/welcome was informative, but wasn't very cheery - quite coldly perfuntuary, short & businesslike. The road to the pitches is also in poor condition - heavily potholed. Our pitch location and size was great, although it sloped down away from the drain at the top/back of the pitch, so it's hard to use use the serviced pitch drain, but this is a minor detail.

Local attractions

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car. Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world. If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting.
