Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This site was absolutely beautiful, being surrounded by the sound of wildlife, bunnies running around, the pond was so beautiful I could honestly sit and watch the pond with the birds and dragonflies for hours. Very peaceful place to re charge and be with your loved ones. We pitched up in the back field, very short two minute walk up to the reception area. Showers and toilets were clean and never too busy, the kitchen area was clean. The lounge was so lovely with the rustic look, plenty of seats and heaters if it got cold. We had everything we could have needed in that one spot. Adult only site, WiFi in the lounge and signal was hit and miss in the tent but we enjoyed the time away from the phones. Thank you !! We will be back !!!

Liked: Beautifully laid out site with excellent facilities. Ingrid & John are very welcoming and helpful. Fabulous walks right from the campsite and Ellesmere is a lovely town nearby. It's a quick drive or a walk along the canal away. Very peaceful with loads of wildlife.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely walks nearby, pub serving good food 30min walk

Disliked: Midges!!! When walking home from our pub dinner, we got to the field and I could hear a buzzing. My partner said must be an electric pilon nearby. Nope! Above the trees were millions, and I mean black clouds of MILLIONS of what I assume were midges! I was so scared of being eaten alive, we left!

From the manager: Hello Felicity , Thanks for your review ! I do feel you have over reacted , the spectacle which you saw , is quite rare , I have been lucky enough to witness it on five occasions in 12 yrs ! It is part of their reproduction & lasts about one hr before dusk , It is an innocuous act , when males pursue females & literally mate in the sky ! They are only interested in each other not you ! Most then die or are predated , meaning these invertebrates form part and are essential to the infrastructure of this S.S.I location [ Site of special scientific Interest ] It is part of an intrinsic link without there would not be the abundance of wildlife you see , such as , Otters, Kingfishers, Crested Grebes , Red throated divers , Goosanders ,Golden eye , Ospreys also call in on migration etc etc !! In short It is an area which we as humans have largely not screwed up ! The odd very small inconvenience which we sometimes encounter , is a very small price to pay , for something quite special ! Many thanks Dave

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
