  • Dog-friendly Cambridgeshire site with 12 acres of meadowland and lakes
  • A 25-minute drive from Cambridge and 35 minutes to Ely; access to A14
  • Carp and coarse fishing lakes; restaurant, shop and kids' centre
What will you reel in first? With carp and coarse fishing on site, and the surrounding Cambridgeshire countryside, it could be a big catch or a haul of memorabilia… or photos of otters and swans at local nature reserves or all the family in front of a mighty cathedral. Set over 12 acres of meadowland and with two small mature fishing lakes on site, Crystal Lakes Caravan Park is a secluded family-friendly and dog-friendly site that's still within reach of a couple of urban areas: it's 10 minutes’ drive from Huntingdon and 25 minutes from Cambridge, with easy access to the A14. Eggs sunny side up or burgers by the bun? Find whichever option gets your tummy rumbling 10 minutes’ walk away in Fenstanton village centre, which has a butcher, two general stores, bakery and newsagent. There are also shops selling fresh garden produce and free-range eggs, an excellent fish and chip shop and a village pub. If you need to work up an appetite for all that food, hit the nearby cycle paths or public footpaths (there are over 600 miles of public footpaths around, as well as the RSPB reserve at Fen Drayton Lakes). Facilities back at base include a laundry area, plus spacious toilets, showers and hand basins, all supplied with free hot and cold water. Kids can play games, run about on the recreation field or sign up for various antics at the activity centre on site (entry charge applies as this is run by a different company). And of course fishing will surely keep you busy… there’s a small daily charge for that, with carp, tench, pike, bream and others to hook out of the two lakes.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Quiet and peaceful site. Lovely views. Good size pitches and well spaced out. Pitches pretty level. Lots of toilets and 4 showers. 2 of the showers are electric and 2 push button, ideal when long hair to wash, having proper electric showers. Space for children to have a run around and play outside, but check for dog poo where they play first as there is a fair amount about the site. Also lake is not fenced so watch little ones. Ours were ok as we were close by and watching but could be dangerous for really small children. Beautiful views of the (small) lake from our pitch though.

Disliked: We only booked here as a last minute site, due to our original booking being flooded so cancelled our weekend. Facilities weren't exactly clean, floors and toilets very much in need of a thorough scrub top to bottom. No hand soap in the toilets (ladies or mens). No paper towel or hand dryers in either gender. Dog poo on our pitch (which was cleaned up once I found someone to report to). Rang bell on arrival and took a while for anyone to arrive. Once someone did come, we was shown to our pitch. Unfortunately we was not shown/told where anything was so had to wander round to figure out ourselves (bins not easy to find). Toilet doors could do with some hooks for coats/wash bags etc. My photos make the facilities look clean but I can assure you they were extremely grimey. One shower in the ladies is missing its drain cover, so watch your footing if showering. You'll definitely want footwear on in the showers! Need more sanitary bins in the ladies loos. This site is clearly aimed at permanent residents and touring an after thought. No WiFi (didn't bother us as had mobile signal)

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Very easy to check in. Facilities were open 24/7 and we're clean. Showers were so amazing! Good location at a very reasonable cost. Look forward to staying here again in the future.

Disliked: I couldn't find where the recycling and general waste bins were but also was too shy to ask. I'm sure I would have been directed accordingly if I asked.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: The pitch was perfect when we eventually got parked up after ringing the bell for attention although the lady on the phone was amazing, that said the shower blocked really does need some work which was very outdated and lots of webs / insects which was probably no issue for the lake fisherman / persons. On a positive it was quiet we arrived after 18.00 and it served a purpose.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Very peaceful, ehu and fresh water close by pitch. Smokehouse restaurant on site. Great spot for fishing. Short walk to local village and bus into St ives

Disliked: Shower block is very outdated, no motorhome service point so couldn't empty grey water. Staff was a young lad who showed us our pitch and was never seen again. The majority of the site is for people living in caravans, statics or 5th wheels and the touring aspect feels like an afterthought. The place, while being clean and tidy, just has a strange vibe to it. Not very welcoming compared to some sites but great if you just want to fish in peace.

Liked: Ground was level and site seemed quite nice.

Disliked: We took a wrong turn and was meet at our Motorhome and told to follow the lad to our pitch - he showed us where electric was and then went back to the office - later we had a few questions for him and rang the bell 3 times and waited and knowone answered the door - disappointing.

Non-electric grass pitch (large)

Liked: Peaceful and clean site , toilet/showers clean but a bit dated, snack bar for hot food was open fri, sat, sun, we had a spacious pitch by the lake. Spoilt by other campers not obeying rules!

Disliked: Dogs running loose and not on leads, and someones dog was loose and crapped a few feet away from our motorhome!! when we told a member of staff he just rolled his eyes and 24 hours later it was still there nobody picked it up. Also the fishing peg had 3 fishing hooks with bait on that someone had left there and our dog grabbed one of them and tried to eat it, luckily my husband managed to prise his mouth open and get it out before he swallowed it otherwise he would of been off to emergency vet, very dangerous..so do check the fishing pegs if you have a dog with you.

Local attractions

Martini or tonic? Pick your poison at the Roundwood Distillery (20 minutes’ drive), where gin is the speciality. Beforehand, line your stomach with goodies sourced from the local market town, Huntington (10 minutes). Welcome to cathedral city… Ely (half an hour) is known as much for its rosy-cheeked gin as it is for its sky-high cathedral and stained glass museum. The cities are pretty imposing here, as Cambridge (25 minutes) is full of learning… master the art of punting on the river Cam or eye up modern art at the museums. Switch modern artefacts for jumbo jets at Britain’s largest aviation museum, Imperial War Museum Duxford (25 minutes). Then, bring things back down to earth at Houghton Mill (15 minutes), a National Trust site with tea rooms, canoeing and cycling at the final remaining mill on the river Ouse. Less for canoeing and more for wildlife spotting, RSPB Fen Drayton Lakes (10 minutes) harbours more waterways, frequented by otters, geese, ducks and swans.
