  • Wild camping on a laidback Suffolk farm
  • A quarter of an hour's drive from Southwold or RSPB Minsmere
  • Local produce sold on site; a mile from a pub and butcher's shop
Beetlebank Farm Wild Camping is a laidback and rural pitching spot surrounded by spectacular Suffolk farmland. Set just back from the A144 and a mile from the village of Bramfield – home to a butcher's and a pub – this site is has excellent views across the countryside and is about a quarter of an hour's drive from England's east coast. The farm is a small, regenerative working farm with rare-breed sheep, goats, chickens and other livestock. There is also a small market garden and flower farm where you can buy freshly-laid eggs and farm-harvested veggies. This is a place where you can leave mod cons at home and reconnect with nature in the fresh air. The farm is surrounded by mature oak trees, bird-filled hedgerows and other rural sounds like the far-off bleating of sheep, making it a great backdrop for simple and serene breaks. Beetlebank Farm Wild Camping supplies all parties coming here with a five-litre bottle of drinking water, as there is no drinking tap available on site (additional bottles can be bought). There are well-maintained portable toilets here, but electricity, showers and other things will need to be sought out in the local area.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: The campsite is dog friendly, fairly small so the two toilets there seem like plenty, we managed to even get some fresh farm eggs (which we had for brekkie and took some home) and even though there's no running water, we got plenty of water for doing dishes and drinking. Moreover, Geoff was very friendly and helped us with sorting out an issue about the fire pit and making sure we would be able to make fire, despite that being out of 'office hours'

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Location close to where I wanted to be,

Disliked: Filthy toilet, there's no way im sitting on that. Situated in a weed field, thistles and ragwort, grass needed cutting. Rubbish needed clearing from the field, someone had abandoned an old tent, which had obviously been there for some time, giving the place a scruffy image. But mostly cut the grass. It would take you all of half an hour with an attachment on the back of a tractor. I chatted to other guests, and they mirrored my thoughts. Close to a main road so expect some traffic noise.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Excellent email from the owner explaining how to access the site. Water waiting for us as described. There were 2 portaloos, one either side of the camping field - do bring a good torch as recommended. We arrived late so I was dubious about using it but in the morning it turned out to be clean and well stocked with loo roll. A short stay for us but the only other campers were a family whose kids seemed to be respectfully enjoying the oak tree and were quiet after bedtime. Great for the price if well prepared.

Liked: Beautiful place . I came with my two dogs that enjoyed just being outdoors. The coast was just a 15 min drive so have spent time in the sea too. Would totally recommend this place but only a toilet which for me was fine .

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: A very peaceful and secluded site located at the back of the farm. The portaloos were very clean with lots of supplies and you aren't restricted as to where you can pitch up. Geoff was lovely and left us a 5L bottle of water under the oak tree, but would definitely recommend bringing more depending on the length of your stay. The site is close to the beaches at Southwold and Dunwich which are both lovely. Dunwich also has a fantastic forest to walk round too.

Disliked: The length of the grass somewhat impeded us on pitching as it made it a bit bumpy underfoot but I guess this is what you get when you're truly wild camping.
