  • Off-grid accommodation in a peaceful County Wildlife Site
  • On the edge of Clare; 45 minutes' drive from Cambridge
  • Three well-stocked fishing lakes and an on-site food concession
Down for a digital detox coupled with a satisfying Suffolk stint? This small-scale site on the outskirts of Clare has accommodation in a quiet corner of a well-established County Wildlife Site. Rum Bridge Glamping is the place to go if you want to treat your travel crew to an off-grid hideaway stay within an hour's drive of Cambridge, Colchester and the coast. Each unit here has a (sunshine-dependent) solar power system to charge up small devices, as well as an outside barbecue area and plentiful picnic furniture. Handy facilities like hot showers, flush toilets and a washing-up area are all close by. You can also ask the site staff to pitch you a well-equipped kitchen tent right next to your accommodation if you prefer cooking under canvas. Carol’s Kitchen, the on-site food concession, also serves up hot and cold snacks and meals throughout the day (the cooks can sort evening takeaways too). Rum Bridge Glamping is a proper wildlife haven and home to fab views over woodlands and marshes. The top attraction for angling fans heading here will be the three well-stocked lakes where you can cast your line for carp, bream, perch and more besides. Dogs should be kept away from this part of the site so the resident Muscovy and Indian Runner ducks can go about their business in peace, but they are welcome (on leads) up at the main site. Rum Bridge Glamping is a mile away from Clare village centre, where there's a small supermarket, a pub and a range of other eateries.

Tipi

Liked: We had a large area for the children to play and enjoy our camping weekend.

Disliked: Very cold at night, maybe need a battery heater/gas bottle heater. No electric in the tent!

Wooden Lake camping pod (lake view, no pets)

Liked: Beautiful location and surrounding grounds, fantastic hosts! Very hospitable, three nice sized private lakes, tasty hot food and drinks served all day and a takeaway menu for evening meals, great to have both eco toilets and normal toilets on site (eco was close to my lodge). Site was well looked after, I especially like all the frees roaming chickens and ducks.

Disliked: Only downside was the weather! It hit minus 4 both nights and the carp didn't want to bite.

Local attractions

Looking to limber up at a leisurely place? Take a stroll to Clare Park Lake Golf Course (five minutes' walk) for a laidback round of the green, or wend your way through the village centre to Clare Priory (20 minutes' walk), a pretty 13th-century church on the banks of the river Stour. Once well and truly warmed up, get the blood pumping at Stour Valley Adventure Centre (20 minutes' drive) with a hired bike or kayak. Haverhill leisure centre (20 minutes) is another sporty option (and it also has the advantage of being weatherproof). Also in town is a cinema where you can while away a couple of hours catching up on the latest blockbuster. Further afield, it's a toss-up between the cobbles and colleges of Cambridge (45 minutes), the historic buildings and landscaped gardens on show at Colchester Castle (50 minutes) and exploring West Mersea (an hour), the closest seaside resort where there are ample opportunities for birding, swimming, oyster sampling and crabbing.
