Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Toilet and shower block were clean and well maintained. Located within walking distance of the local shop and pub. Lots of grass lawn for the kids to play.

Disliked: We didn't receive any instructions before our arrival so we found it really difficult to find. There's no signage at the site entrance to say you're in the right place and the satnav doesn't take you all the way to site. It's made more difficult by a massive gate with code entry and no intercom or instructions. Even when we managed to get through the gate the 'office' was closed, we managed to find the warden, who didn't seem particularly sure whether we had a booking until he found some paperwork for us. Not the best start, but once on the pitch all was fine and the warden was really helpful and friendly. I also didn't understand the need for a list of codes to get into the amenities, when you can't get on site because of the vehicle and pedestrian gates.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The toilets were lovely clean and warm. Lovely to watch rabbits running about and hearing sheep

Disliked: Far too long walk to toilets. WiFi didn't reach to our pitch. Pitch flooded when it rained so awning was like a swimming pool. The grass on the rally field were we were had not been cut very overgrown. The path on site stopped half way along first field then had to drive on long muddy grass to get to pitch. The road leading up to site was full of large pot holes unavoidable . Suspension on car damaged.

Local attractions

To begin with caves, birds of prey or estates of old? If it’s the historical stuff you’re really into, close spots include Beningbrough Hall (20 minutes’ drive), a National Trust estate with Italian touches and great gardens for family or dog walks, or Newby Hall & Gardens (20 minutes), where there are house tours, boat trips down the river Ure and a miniature railway. In York, the National Railway Museum (half an hour) will carry on any history-themed itinerary – as will archery, canoeing or bushcraft in the grounds of Ripley Castle (half an hour), a stroll around Fountains Abbey (half an hour) or a brew in the splendid Harewood House (35 minutes). To turn your attention to the wild stuff, however, head for the York Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes), where events take place throughout the year, or Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying Wall (20 minutes) in the Royal Forest, a natural place with plenty of legends to keep things exciting.
