  • Adult-only Northumberland glamping overlooking the Cheviot Hills
  • A mile from Bamburgh; half-hour drive to Holy Island
  • Smart bell tents with bedding, stove, barbecue and cool box provided
This is ‘camping without the crouching’ say the folk who run Bamburgh Under Canvas, in the Northumberland hamlet of Glororum, about a mile away from Bamburgh. The lotus bell tents have a clever design that gives maximum head height throughout the whole tent – so you’ll be able to walk around freely without getting a crick in your neck. It’s not all about the size though – these adults-only tents have been set up with luxury in mind, so the site has the vibe of a smart hotel (with the added bonus of some fine views out over the Cheviot Hills). Each tent sleeps two, in a bed that’s got a comfy mattress and top-quality bed linen (throws, cushions and soft towels are all thrown in too). A stove keeps things cosy even on chilly evenings, and you can also use it to brew up a hot drink in the morning. There’s also a barbecue/firepit for alfresco cooking with a view (and a gas stove for when you need something more quickly…) Each tent also has a cool box to keep the all-important drinks nicely chilled. Even the bathrooms are smart here… they’re in a couple of refurbished horse boxes with hot showers, toilets and basins, plus a collection of toiletries to use. You’ll have battery-powered lamps (and battery packs) in your tent but it’s worth bringing a torch too, even if only for that short walk to the loo. Heading out, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Bamburgh for the castle and beach, along with several shops, pubs and places to eat.

Liked: Lovely stay here for three nights, owner was friendly and helpful, the tent was warm and comfortable with enough wood for two nights, clean sheets on the bed with throws and the tent was immaculate when we arrived, showers were excellent, clean and always had hot water, very quiet spot and lovely watching the sunset and looking at the stars

Local attractions

Bamburgh’s attractions are the place to start, of course – a 20-minute amble or five-minute drive will take you down into the village centre to visit the glorious seaside castle and learn about a local heroine at the Grace Darling Museum. You can also play a round at Bamburgh Castle Golf Club or head to the beach for a stroll through the dunes and a bit of surfing (kit hire and lessons are available if you need them). Elsewhere along the coast, you can board boat trips to the Farne Islands from Seahouses Harbour (10 minutes) to spot puffins, seals and other marine creatures, or drive across the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (half an hour). There’s also another lovely castle at Dunstanburgh (25 minutes). Alternative visits nearby include the excellent displays at Andy Howey Birds and Reptiles (20 minutes) and walks to find the spiritual site of St Cuthbert’s Cave (25 minutes).
