  • Luxury five-metre bell tent in the grounds of a Georgian country house
  • A 10-minute drive from Dunstanburgh Castle; Alnwick 15 minutes
  • Hot breakfast available
Grab your gear and get on down to the grounds of a Georgian country house close to the gorgeous Northumberland coast – stays at the Old Rectory are pleasantly peaceful and have interrupted views over green farmland. It’s a lovely set-up at the glamping accommodation here – you'll be staying in a six-metre bell tent in a quiet corner surrounded by trees. It's kitted out with a double bed, a woodburning stove and handy bits like a fridge and kettle, as well as lots of gorgeous furnishings. A 50-metre walk takes you to a private shower and toilet in the refurbished dovecot. Tummy grumbles? No worries. Book a hot breakfast butty for delivery to your tent (place your order the night before). For other meals, a barbecue area is available outside the tent, and there's a small fridge inside for storing basic provisions. Brews are sorted too, as tea and coffee are both provided. Guests staying here have a key to the main bed and breakfast, where there is a guest lounge and fully licensed bar. If you're happy to order ahead, a dining room is also on hand where you can have dinner with the other guests. One big perk of this place (aside from the spectacular scenery) is that it’s only about 400 yards from the coast in the peaceful village of Howick. The slightly larger fishing village of Craster is also accessible via the coast path about 30 minutes’ walk away, where there is a tourist information centre and a pub.

Bell tent

Liked: Back to nature. The Bell Tent was a comfortable alternative to our normal camping. facilities provided. Option of camp cooking or guest house alternative ( with 24 hour notice). Within travelling distance of Northumbrian beauty spots, historical areas etc.

Disliked: We are aware that this is a historical building, however, the window of the dovecote (shower room) may benefit from a ‘frosted’ and vented covering.

Bell tent

Liked: Beautiful stay in the magnificent bell tent. It was perfectly decorated and in such a lovely location. Really appreciated the little touches like the continental breakfast table and delicious yogurt jars in the fridge! Proper coffee on a morning was a massive hit! The electric heater was also a winner. We loved having access to the main house too.

Disliked: Just a bit 'spidery' in the toilet/shower.

Bell tent

Liked: Our own private tent and space, with gas BBQ too. All amenities that you need. It’s cold at night in a tent, but the duvet and blanket was thick and kept us warm. It was great that we could use the lounge in the house too. Loved the honesty bar. Great idea. Dave and Jude were lovely and helpful. Good breakfast and a hot shower

Disliked: The wood pigeons above our heads in the trees. They never seemed to sleep!

Bell tent

Liked: The tent itself was beautiful, although slightly different from the website picture...but none the less lovely. Lovely carpets, comfy bed, nice and warm (with electric heater on) and just a lovely feel to it, we felt very relaxed in it. You can hear the sea in bed, and the surroundings and peace are truely wonderful. The beach is a 10min walk (2 min drive with parking) and you will have it to yourself, or at least we did. The owners are lovely and so helpful.

Disliked: The toilet and shower are separate and a little walk, which is nice as it is under the trees and sheltered. However, the toilet and shower need some work, felt like they needed to be finished. The shower is lovely but you get out of it onto an uncomfortable "bitty" floor (dirty feet) and it could do with a mirror and sink in the room also. The toilet (as with the shower itself) is clean but again the room it is in needs finishing off and flooring- these few additional though and it would be wonderful. The tent is removed from the house so is outside of free WiFi signal when you are i it or at least was for us. Not sure that this is fixable easily and sort of added to the charm!

Bell tent

Liked: Interior of tent & facilities.. super spongey bed & softest blanket in the universe!! & nice cushions.. Dave was very down to earth, helpful & pleasant.. but seemed overworked.. nice field view, good shower, ducks & chickens, nice homemade fruit yoghurt jars, cereals etc.., good selection of tea & coffee, custard pastries, biscuits & croissants, orange citronella candle (supplied on request), radiators, towels, old church bell ringing..

Disliked: ..that it wasn’t a bell tent with chimney like in the picture.. but was actually a lotus style bell tent- which I don’t like the look of.. although it has more ceiling height.. .. dodgy sagging decking on way to loo.. & big trip hazard from missing decking planks in outdoor seating area.. broken steps up to viewing platform - so couldn’t use it to sit or see the sea! ..was a shame! dodgy bbq- difficult to use - very hard to get pipe attached to canister & to get the ignition to work- seems old & a bit knackered.. in-line with the general unkemptness of the outside areas.., old beer bottle & can just left thrown in ditch by previous guests, next to seating area.. ..shower went cold & lights went off whilst I was in shower.. toilet, sink & shower were clean but the outhouse building they are in is very grubby & badly decorated with paint splashes on floors & walls.. & just way to scruffy for a holiday place.. not what I was expecting.. the shower & cubicle & toiletries are swanky tho.. a sharp contrast in appearance! .. large hogweed plants on pathway & uneven dodgy pathway from decking round to the tent entrance steps, quarry noise, boy-racer type car starting up early in the morning..

Local attractions

Straight off to the coast, you go… some smoked kippers for a snack in Craster Harbour (30 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive) first? Setting sail for the seabirds of the Farne Islands from Seahouses (40 minutes) or crossing the causeway over to Holy Island (35 minutes) for pubs, an ancient priory and castle ruins? With your first taste of a castle under your belt, there are many more to add to your wishlist, including the twin-towered Dunstanburgh Castle (10 minutes), the medieval Warkworth Castle (20 minutes) and the artefacts-packed armoury, state rooms and king’s hall at Bamburgh Castle (30 minutes). Perhaps a dose of earl grey and flower sniffing around the arboretum at Howick Hall (five minutes) is rather your cup of tea? If not, then Newcastle (an hour) might be your next port of call, as it has activities of all sorts, from trips to the theatre or sprees in the large shopping centres to tracing some of the Hadrian’s Wall path through the city centre and checking out the Tyne Bridges over the river Tyne.
