  • Family-friendly, peaceful site near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
  • Half an hour’s drive from Gibson Mill and Haworth
  • Adjacent to the Pack Horse Inn with direct access to the Pennine Way
Fancy a spot of almost-wild camping on a working family farm in the South Pennines? You’re looking at the right place then, as Ridge Fold Camping is a pop-up campsite surrounded by farm animals and with wonderful scenery on the edge of the Brontë moors. If you fancy getting stuck into rural life even more, farming activity days (seasonal lambing, calving and shearing) can be booked when you arrive on site for an additional cost. The area is well known for its birds, wildlife and spectacular scenery, with miles of footpaths – including the Pennine Way – to explore, making it the perfect location for walking or mountain biking. Or you can simply kick back amid the wonderful views and enjoy a leisurely break surrounded by nature. Time for a well-deserved holiday pint? The campsite is adjacent to the Pack Horse Inn, a coaching inn dating back to 1610 and serving real ales and hot food (including cooked breakfasts at weekends). The inn also has a small shop selling daily essentials. On-site facilities include a ladies and gents' toilet block, and there is a cold-water bowser for drinking water. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, but due to the livestock on site, canine chums need to be in a lead at all times.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really nice grass in a large field. Clean, quite large toilet block and washing up facilities. In a quiet area so a nice quiet nights sleep. The host is really nice and makes sure you are happy with things. We got a fire-pit and we're surprised to be given a bucket full of wood so we had a great fire burning for hours.

Disliked: The pub next door didn't have a great menu for children, also very pricey so if you are planning on using this as a cheap country pub while on a camping trip, maybe not.

From the manager: Thank you so much Adam, it was a pleasure to meet you all, glad you enjoyed yourselves despite the average weather. Kind regards Jane

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Small, friendly, clean, great views. Animals. No phone signal what so ever (some may dislike this) fenced off so my 3 year old could roam safely. Pub next door (which we didn't get to enjoy as the electric box got struck by lightning)

Disliked: The weather, I know this can't be helped but I didn't realise it was so high up. Didn't feel safe in the wind and packed up at 6am.

From the manager: Hi Amy, thanks for leaving a review, sorry it was such a disappointing experience for you due to the terrible British weather, it’s just unfortunate everything went abit pear shaped with the power cut 🥲 Thanks for coming anyway. Kind regards Jane 😊

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice site right next to the Pack horse pub with some great views and some fantastic hikes right on your doorstep. Toilets were nice and clean and the lady that came to see us once we had pitched up was very genuine and around at various times during the day to make sure things were kept clean and tidy. Site was quiet in that their were no noisy occupants. There was a group of young men there all together but they were again very quiet and respectful to other users of the site. All in all a very pleasant stay and would highly recommend for anyone keen on the outdoors. Suitable for all age groups too and plenty of space for families to play sports together in the middle of the site.

Disliked: If a shower block was added in the future it would just be the icing on the cake but it wasn't advertised with one so no complaint there.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location, remote and peaceful camping Ground flat

Disliked: You have to take your own rubbish! No showers

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Oliver, thanks for taking the time to leave a review, I am sorry you had such a disappointing weekend, I’m not sure what you were quite expecting from a pop up campsite, because it is exactly as described on pitchup, I am suprised you marked us 6 for cleanliness, the toilets are cleaned twice daily, I wish you would have spoken to me at the time if you felt unhappy. Regards the rubbish I did explain to you the reason why we have to ask people to take it home with them, the price we charge would not stand the collection and disposal charge. Kind regards Jane

Excellent site, the pitch was level and the owners are very friendly.

Local attractions

Hike up to Hardcastle Crags (20 minutes’ drive) or up the activity levels with a moorland yomp to Top Withens (90 minutes’ walk) to see the inspiration for Emily Brontë’s famous novel ‘Wuthering Heights’. Mix in some cultural time with a visit to Emily’s study at the Brontë Parsonage Museum (half an hour) in Haworth, and take a tour of the Piece Hall (35 minutes), Halifax’s wonderfully restored Georgian-era cloth hall. You can learn all about West Yorkshire’s former textile industry at Gibson Mill (30 minutes), which produced cotton until 1890. Pick up souvenirs for the folks back home from Boundary Mill outlet store (20 minutes) in Colne, or potter around the indie shops in Skipton (40 minutes), which is also gateway to hikes in the Dales. The art deco Hebden Bridge Picture House (15 minutes) takes care of any rainy days with showings of feel-good films, while a nose around the famous May’s Shop (10 minutes) in Heptonstall is recommended – it’s been run by the same elderly lady for years and is a much-loved local institution.
