  • Family-friendly site on a field by the Cumbrian coast
  • A 20-minute drive from the Lake District; Whitehaven 35 minutes
  • Overlooking Allonby Bay, with access to bike paths and coastal trails
Spend your days down at the beach or taking trips to the Lake District at Allonby Bay Camping, a simple and scenic camping field mere metres from Cumbria's Solway Coast. Easily located just off the B5300 between the villages of Silloth and Allonby, this relaxed spot is directly opposite the long sweeping bay, with easy access to bike paths and coastal hiking trails that can take you off for days of outdoor exploration. The land here has the added advantage of being very well set up to welcome guests – it's spacious, level and accessible by pushchairs or prams. Set two miles from the owners' family-run farm, Allonby Bay Camping is also in a strategic position for trips to the Lake District – it's an agreeable 20-minute drive to the national park boundary and about half an hour to Bassenthwaite Lake National Nature Reserve. On a more local level, the site has direct access to a bike path that can take you into Allonby village centre (a mile to the south) or on to the historic harbour town of Maryport (half an hour by bike or 10 minutes by car). Stick around in the former to take the kids to a playground, get active at the leisure centre, pick up food and drink at the pubs or fish and chip shop or, for a special treat, take a trip to a popular local ice cream shop.

Local attractions

Jump on your bike and in half an hour you can be strolling around the shops, eateries and harbour sights of Maryport, a local coastal town where there's also an aquarium by the harbour. Carry on in the same direction to visit the historic port of Whitehaven (35 minutes), home to a rum museum, an independent cinema and lots of architectural heritage. Although you may be tempted to just stick to the Solway Coast, it's also worth heading inland to explore the Lake District National Park. The nearest lake, Bassenthwaite, is about half an hour away and looks particularly scenic when viewed from the vantage points of the traditional manor at Mirehouse and Gardens (35 minutes) or from atop the lofty heights of Skiddaw (45 minutes to the trailhead). Elsewhere in the area, you might like to step in the footsteps of the Romans at Bowness-on-Solway (40 minutes), the westernmost edge of the Hadrian's Wall Path, or explore the southern coast and hills with a nostalgic ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (an hour).
