  • Camping for small groups on a family-run farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Appleby-in-Westmorland; Pooley Bridge 40 minutes
  • Spectacular views of the Upper Eden Valley
Welcome to Bankwood Farm, a spectacular rural site in Cumbria’s Upper Eden Valley. Set at the foot of the Pennines, guests can disconnect from the routine of daily life on pitches in a spacious field with access to on-site facilities. Far-reaching views stretch out over the Pennines, fells and all the way down to the Lake District (which can also be reached for day trips in about 40 minutes), and you can head out for hikes to the likes of Murton Pike and High Cup Nick from the farm. Wildlife is truly abundant here: look out for red squirrels, barn owls, curlews, lapwings and (if you're particularly lucky) otters. This working farm specialises in sheep and cattle, and the owners will be happy to show you around if they have a spare moment. Farm-produced food like sausages and eggs is also available for breakfast. What do stays look like here? Well, there's a proper toilet with hot water and a water refill point located a short walk from the pitches, with rubbish disposal also taken care of on site. A charging point is also available. Coming here without a car? The farmers can pick you up from the nearest station in Appleby-in-Westmorland (five miles from base) or the Pennine Way by arrangement. Please note that the field isn't totally flat and has limited level space. If this is a concern for you, the site recommends limiting the number of tents you bring to two.

The Croft non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This has quickly become one of our favourite campsites ever! We travelled with friends and had 6 children between us, 2 have additional needs so we booked both sides of the site knowing our needs would be well and truly met. We weren’t disappointed! We pitched in the idyllic field by the stream and used the shack area for cooking and hanging out when it rained. We made so many s’mores and the children thrived on the freedom they had. There’s also a little honesty shop selling the most delicious meat from the farm and loads of other things you might need. The big and little farmers took great care of us, taking the time to show us their fantastic farm and making sure we had everything we needed. We were also able to have a later check out (prearranged) which made a massive difference to us. Our absolute favourite bit was the little shack on the camping field which is kitted out with fairy lights and absolutely perfect for a glass of wine (and a bag of haribo from the honesty shop) when the children are tucked up!

The Shack electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything! We stayed on The Shack pitch - wonderful views and a fantastic setting on a working farm. Our children really enjoyed watching the cows being milked! The site is well positioned for days out to The Lakes (we enjoyed days out to Windermere and Ullswater) and also Barnard Castle. The Honesty Shop onsite was a lovely addition and was well stocked. The barn was really useful for shelter during the rain and was great for cooking in. The bathroom was clean and great to have exclusively to ourselves. The electric shower was hot and the pressure was excellent! Our host was on-hand to ensure we settled in and was super friendly throughout our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to return - we would highly recommend!

Disliked: Nothing.

The Shack electric optional grass and gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We had a fabulous time at Bankwood Farm! Gemma and her family were incredibly welcoming, giving the children tours of the farm, answering any questions that we had about the farm/ farming and making sure that we knew that nothing was too much trouble. We even witnessed a calf being born- how many children can say that they saw that during the summer holidays?!? The children in the group made friends with her children too, so they were all kept occupied and happy. The provision of a toilet, hot shower, running water, fridge freezer and kettle made a huge difference. We are already planning our next trip to Bankwood Farm!

Disliked: Nothing- we couldn’t find any fault!

The Croft non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely loved this campsite! Remote, beautiful views, a stream my son couldn't stay out of, on a farm, animals we got to know, including a chicken who entered our tent to try and eat our grapes! We were in the croft and had our own washing up area and toilet a short walk away through the gate. The shower was warm and in a converted horse box. The owners were friendly and helpful with the local walks. We were a family of 3, with our son. I arrived before my husband and son and had a great chat and a cup of tea, while waiting for them to arrive (too much camping stuff for 1 car). There is an on site little shop, selling home reared sausages and burgers, including gluten free sausages. There was an open fire pit area, with a 1st supply of logs. More could be bought on site, if needed. We had a fabulous time and will be looking to book again. We especially liked that they only book one family on the croft, so not sharing with others.

Disliked: Nothing! For us, this was perfect. Just be mindful that the croft is not level.

The Croft non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We spent 4 nights on the croft then 2 on the shack , the croft is absolutely gorgeous, the children loved the space and freedom of the field , we enjoyed dinner with a fire on a dry day which was amazing. The croft has a lovely hot shower in a converted horse box in the field with space to dry your clothes and even a washing line 😁 The toilet is a short walk as way and there is a lovely covered washing up area to do the pots at right next door to the loo. The red squirrels are in the trees/small wood just opposite the wash up area and can be seen rummaging in their food boxes most mornings ☺️ We had chickens come to visit our tent everyday , which we all loved especially my toddler 😃 Sheep are in the field just next to the croft as well ☺️ There is a little honestly shop that sells meat , eggs , snacks and some other essentials (which were delicious 😋) A small box next to the honestly shop houses a few charger points for you to charge your phones etc which was really useful. The shack was a welcome relief from the wind and rain , the barn is huge so we stored most of our stuff in there , great for unpacking and packing up having a big space to put everything if it's raining. There's a washing line in the barn too that things dry really quickly on. The barn has a small kitchen , with a fridge and small freezer box. Lots of sockets and usb charge points , a kettle (which was just amazing after using our gas cooker to make tea and warm baby bottles) Also a cupboard and some shelves to store food etc . There's also 2 picnic benches in the barn making rainy day cooking and eating so much easier. The views from the shack are beautiful too. Gemma and her family were really welcoming and so nice to let us move over to the shack with the bad weather. All in all we had a lovely time and will definitely be back ☺️

Disliked: Nothing - everything was amazing ☺️

The Croft non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a lovely week with family and friends, a whole field to ourselves for the children to play and as the farm was set back from the roads this was so peaceful, a beautiful sunset and relaxing atmosphere, the only sounds was from the children playing and the animals which was lovely to wake up to especially the newborn baby calfs. Gemma, Trevor and their 3 lovely children was there to help and gave us a fantastic tour of the farm, the children loved this and the 4 little chickens joining us on the field everyday was a great suprise, the honesty shop was great for the kids to make s’mores of an evening around the fire, the charging box was a godsend and a wonderful idea. Gemma was happy to assist with directions to places and immediately fixed the shower when we couldn’t work it (none of the 6 adults could figure it out haha). I have no Complaints and will definitely return. Thanks for a fantastic week and some good memories for the children!

Liked: Loved everything! Our neighbours were the best….beautiful sheep, enjoyed watching them just go about their day, our own little toilet and shower - loved this! Charging box (great for the phone loving kids) so peaceful, although we only managed one camp fire (thanks to the good old British weather) was wonderful to have our own fire pit and picnic bench, we will definitely be returning, views are fantastic, Brilliant owners too!

Disliked: Nothing! Fantastic!
