  • Glamping site in Walney Island Nature Reserve near Barrow-in-Furness
  • A 20-minute drive to South Lakes Safari Zoo; Furness Abbey 15 minutes
  • Spacious, stylish yurt with a four-poster bed and camping kitchen
Bird lovers, wildlife spotters and indeed anyone who just wants a bit of peace and quiet, welcome to West Point Woods, a glamping site near Barrow-in-Furness that’s almost literally teeming with the sounds and sights of nature. Surrounded by Walney Island Nature Reserve and backed by the sandy expanse of Earnse Bay, this is just the spot for exploring an untamed corner of Cumbria. You’ll soon chill and be thoroughly unwound at this dog-friendly and laid-back site – relax and spend time watching for oystercatchers and plovers by day, and on clear nights witness dazzling stars glittering in the dark skies above. Each unit has its own camping kitchen with all the basics for putting together simple camping meals, and a communal barbecue area with a firepit and seating means you can eat alfresco on sunny days And by the way, Barrow-in-Furness (10 minutes’ drive) has all the shops you might need for stocking up on supplies, as well as pubs and pizzerias if you fancy a night out.

Liked: 1 think we like on side was a weather

Disliked: Camp site situated in a middle of housing estate ,so you feel like on someone back garden. No electrics no hitting so you can freeze to death

From the manager: Thank you for reviewing your stay at West Point. We are really disappointed to hear you did not enjoy your stay with us. We do feel had you have read the properly listing we clearly indicate the site is without power & runs from Solar packs for off grid camping. Whilst the pods are not heated we offer hot water bottles, throws & winter duvets in your unit & Yurts can be booked as a heated alternative which is indicated in the descriptions. Unfortunately whilst our location is driving through a housing area the site itself is located towards the tip of the island with a 2 minute walk to a 4 mile beach line & surrounded by nature in Walney Islands nature reserve. Thank you again for taking the time to review our property.

Liked: We loved how hospitable the host was. He made sure he was there to greet us and show us to our yurt, which was immaculate and beautifully presented. No detail was missed and extra provisions were given to make our stay warm and comfortable. Due to the weather being so cold we were also given access to the building for indoor showers and toilet use. The facilities were the cleanest and the staff were the friendliest. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Liked: We loved all the special and thoughtful little touches on arrival such as a lovely warm welcome, a tour of the amenities, power packs, ice packs, a concise and polite safety run down and the promise of anything we need at the end of a txt or call... We loved the location, shared yet private... you arrive through a housing estate yet hear all the nearby nature, allowed us to feel out in the sticks... Clean, tidy and so very comfortable x

Disliked: Running out of gas on the morning we were leaving, so couldn't make a brew

Local attractions

Keen to get out and about discovering the coastline? Walk the circular Walney Island Coast Path (five minutes’ drive) past beaches, rolling dunes and salt marshes, or join the Morecambe Bay Cycleway (20 minutes), stopping off by the reed beds at RSPB Leighton Moss for the chance to spot otters, marsh harriers and red deer. Wildlife is never far away in Cumbria. Get up close to red pandas and encounter big cats during keeper talks and feeding sessions at South Lakes Safari Zoo (20 minutes), or take the ferry from Roa Island (20 minutes) to South Walney Nature Reserve to see more rare animals at Cumbria’s only seal colony. Cross to Piel Island (also from Roa Island) for a ramble around the shoreline and a visit to the 14th-century castle ruins before popping into the Ship Inn to sample local brews and island-caught fish dishes. There’s another impressive ruin to explore at Furness Abbey (15 minutes), and the family-friendly Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness (five minutes) has lots of summer events with music and dancing.
