  • Rural site with Pennines views, close to the Lakes and Solway Firth
  • A 10-minute drive to the North Pennines; half an hour to the Lakes
  • Peaceful pitches with walks from site; close to a foodie pub and shops
What a spot for walkers, cyclists and indeed anybody who wants to get out and about in spectacular countryside. Cairndale Caravan Park is in a fabulous location with easy access to not one – but two – Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and if that wasn’t enough, the Lake District National Park is on hand too. This is quite a small site at the foot of the Pennines AONB, and as it’s surrounded by greenery wherever you look, you might just want to lie back in or by your tent and take in the views. Chances are, however, that the call of all those walks across moorland to spectacular waterfalls will spur you into action. You might prefer to pack everybody into the car and head to the Lakes (30 minutes’ drive) to go boating on the water or walk a section of the Ullswater Way. Slightly further afield, the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (45 minutes) will reveal seemingly endless beaches for kids and dogs to romp around on. If you fancy cosy nights around the barbecue, stock up on grill bits and bobs at Brampton’s convenience stores (take a look at the ruined abbey while you’re there). Otherwise there’s a destination pub in Cumwhitton (five minutes' drive) and a huge choice of restaurants and takeaways in Carlisle (20 minutes).

Electric gravel and earth touring pitch

Liked: Liked everything about the place. Clean, tidy and quiet. The propreitor was very friendly and helpful. The birds were plentiful and sang beautifully, despite the weather ( Storm Kathleen.). Nicely secluded site.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Electric gravel and earth touring pitch

Liked: Quiet, total peace. I could only hear birds and a running stream. Very clean toilets and basins. Text message acknowledged my booking and told me where the pitches were.

Disliked: Only one pitch nearly level, and all tight to manoeuvre into. One shower in an old shed, very dated, no heating. No motorhome service point, no drive over drain and filling point. No security at all. I didn't see any staff. No local area info.

Electric gravel and earth touring pitch

Liked: Location -in the countryside, with good pubs close by for food Pitches - level and close to toilet block/pot wash Showers & Toilet block - clean and adequate for 10 pitches Overall presentation - neat and tidy Fees - about right

Disliked: The light in the women's toilet is on a sensor, and it doesn't work after dark. I texted the owners to advise 16th August, but got no reply. We revisited the site 21st August and the light still did not work after dark. I texted the owners again and no reply again. It's really creapy going to the toilet block after dark to find there are no lights inside. Please can maintenance fix this and reply to this review.

Local attractions

Take the trail of the remains of a 73-mile Roman wall through rural landscapes… and when you’ve finished with Hadrian’s Wall (half an hour’s drive), pedal, hike or trot your way through the gorgeous North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes) or let yourself unwind with watersports, paddles and more properly good hikes in the Lake District National Park (30 minutes). The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (45 minutes) is there when you’re in need of some stunning seaside scenery instead. As for sailing or fishing, well, Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes) is the place for that. Golf is just 30 minutes away too – and as for racing events, they can be found over at the Carlisle Racecourse (20 minutes). For low-key days of shopping, sightseeing and strolling the streets, Brampton (15 minutes) has a market and ruined abbey, while the market town of Penrith (half an hour) has another great buzzy atmosphere. If it’s ancient villages and riverside strolls that also take your fancy, then you’ll have easy enough access to the Vale of Eden (30 minutes) from this site.
