  • Family-run village pub site in rural northern Cumbria
  • A 10-minute drive from Carlisle and 20 minutes from Gretna Green
  • Food, real ales, open fire and a beer garden
The team at The Wellington Inn and Caravan Park describe their part of the world as 'Cumbria's best-kept secret' – and they've got a pretty good point. If you're looking for somewhere far from the crowds of the Lake District yet close to plenty of scenic day trips, the quiet countryside to the west of Carlisle is full of nature reserves, forests and gorgeous coastline that might just be what you're looking for… This spacious and well-maintained site is located to the rear of a friendly village pub (open from Wednesday to Sunday only) in the small settlement of Great Orton. Pitching up here brings a lot of satisfying pub food and drink – including real ales – within easy reach. If you fancy a barbecue, just bring one along and send a member of your party out to pick up a few cuts at the village butcher's, a quarter of a mile down the road. Carlisle's amenities, eateries and family-friendly attractions are all approximately 10 minutes away by car. The Scottish border at Gretna Green is also a quick 20-minute journey to the north, making The Wellington Inn and Caravan Park an excellent stop-off point on longer road trips. Guests have access to pub toilets (during pub opening hours) but please note there are no showers on site, and no toilets by the pitches. Dogs are welcome on site and are free to join you for a drink in the beer garden, but unfortunately cannot be taken inside the pub.

From the manager: Sorry your stay wasn't a good experience for you. Our records show that your stay with us was on Saturday 16th March. Myself as the owner would have been in the bar of The Wellington Inn hosting our St Patricks celebrations where you could have spoken to me or any of the staff who would have been more than happy to help you. If you needed me out of pub opening times then my mobile number is on the sign at the caravan park enteance and also on your booking information so I am always available. I do a walk around of the site to make sure everything looks ok once all bookings have all arrived. And again in the morning after checkout time (so nobody feels like we are pressuring you to leave) As for the toilets it is on all information for you to read before you make a booking with pitchup. We can't be more honest with our advert for the site all information for the site, pub and whats in the area is there for you to read.

Liked: Nice clean small site right next to the Wellington pub. The hosts were very friendly. Pub was busy as it was New Years Eve. Pitch was perfectly level so no need to get the chock levellers out!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely stopover for 1 night. We had an evening meal at the pub, it was very nice. We did pre-book as advised and it was quite busy. Easy booking for overnight spot, choose your own spot upon arrival.

Disliked: Dogs not allowed in pub (only in beer garden) not ideal for evening meal in December.

Local attractions

Wildlife isn't hard to come by in this part of northern Cumbria, as you're a mere five-minute drive from Watchtree Nature Reserve, a former RAF airbase that's been rewilded and has a number of tarmac car-free cycle trails to explore (with bike and tricycle hire also available). For more time outdoors, head five minutes down the road to the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre and learn about how to handle a hawk like a pro. Having Carlisle so close by is also a major plus – drop the kids off at Fusion Trampoline Park (10 minutes) for a big old bounce, push your limits and scale the different courses at Eden Rock (15 minutes), a local indoor climbing centre, or learn more about the area at Tullie House Museum And Art Gallery (10 minutes). Drive slightly further afield and you'll quickly come to more top-quality days out. The nearest waterside spot in the Lake District National Park is Bassenthwaite, half an hour from base, a relatively quiet lake that's home to rare bird species including osprey.
