  • Wild camping with a gorgeous rural location close to the Cumbria Way
  • A five-minute drive to Coniston and 10 minutes from Tarn Hows lake
  • Dog-friendly campsite with essential facilities provided
High Yewdale Camping really is wild camping, with just a handful of pitches in a Lake District valley field. Surrounded by exceptional views of the Cumbrian fells, this peaceful site welcomes adventurous families looking for a back-to-basics camping experience. There’s easy access to the site from the A593 (note, down a farm track), and plenty of parking away from the camping field. Kids and dogs can run around freely and safely, or splash in the river that runs alongside the field. Mini-breaks here put you in the heart of walking country, so you can take a gentle family stroll right from the campsite or choose more challenging routes up Wetherlam or Dow Crag. Coniston Water (there’s sailing on the lake too) and the Old Man of Coniston are both less than 15 minutes’ drive from the campsite, and the long-distance Cumbria Way, which starts in Coniston, can be accessed close to the field. There are local pubs and shops in the village, so you can source supplies for your barbecue here or head to Ambleside (15 minutes' drive) for a bigger selection of stores. If you fancy exploring the Lakes by car, there are plenty of Beatrix Potter- and William Wordsworth-themed attractions to fill up your days.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very out of the way of the busy town meaning it is peaceful & the views were lovely. Clean campsite & not noisy at all. Boxes of food/ milk and drinking water provided.

Disliked: The toilets got a little dirty towards the end of our stay but nothing major. & no showered but we obviously knew about that before we came so probably wouldn’t stay longer than 1 night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The field was flat, not too windy and pretty quiet. The location was really good and there was always toilet roll in the porta loos. Even though there were no showers (which I knew in advance), there’s a really nice stream right next to the campsite that you can take a dip in.

Disliked: The porta loos smelt pretty bad. It would have been nice to have some sort of sink to properly wash hands, rather than just hand sanitizer.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location is peaceful with stunning views. Less than 10 minutes from Coniston in car. Site had everything we needed including very clean toilets, clean drinking water and an honesty box set up which was well stocked (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, crisps, cereal etc). Loved being beside the stream listening to the water. If not a fan, there are plenty of pitches on the site where you can enjoy silence. We enjoyed it so much, we paid to stay an extra night. Highly recommend this site!
