  • Small back to basics site on a spacious Cumbria smallholding
  • A five-minute drive from Torver and 10 from Coniston village
  • Pick your own pitch; pub two miles away
Torver Campsite is a small, friendly site in a quiet corner of Cumbria five minutes’ drive from Torver and 10 minutes from Coniston. From here it’s easy to get out to some of the finest spots in the Lake District – not just Coniston Water and the Old Man of Coniston but also Hawkshead, Hill Top and Windermere. There are lots of quieter lakes, footpaths and fells around if you’d like to get away from the crowds, and you can drive to the coast in about half an hour if you’re after a change of scenery. Life on site is pretty straightforward: you need simply turn up and pick whatever pitch you like the look of in the huge field. Portable toilets (cleaned daily) and clean water are provided but you’ll need to bring along anything else you need. There’s a pub a couple of miles away and plenty of places to pick up food or settle in for drinks and meals in Coniston village.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views were lovely, had fresh water.

Disliked: The field wasn’t level. Toilets were portaloos which doesn’t bother me but the they weren’t clean at all. One of the toilets didn’t have liquid in it. When I first arrived there were only 2 toilets for the campsite but they did bring 2 more later on in the evening. Thought £25 a night was a little pricey considering it was just a field.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet location, just a short drive from Torver village. We loved it because it was so quiet. Very basic facilities - porter loos and cold water on site but just as was described before we booked. It was the perfect spot for us and I am keen to book again. When I left the tent to nip to the loo during the night, I was absolutely amazed to see the night sky, the stars were so clear and they filled the sky! It was beautiful! Living where we do, we do not seem to have such clear views of the skies.

Disliked: Nothing, the site was as described on the advert.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very quiet - apart from the sound of sheep. Beautiful views of rolling hills and the Irish Sea in the far distance. Only a 10 minute drive to Coniston which has lots of boats etc to hire at a really good price. Not as busy as Windermere.

Disliked: We were not informed that we needed to download the ‘what3words’ app to find exact coordinates as the site was difficult to navigate. These a hand painted site that says “camping” at the very narrow entry. It is up ‘old rake’… it’s a very steep road - not fantastic if you’re driving an old 1 litre car (it was a struggle to get there). The facilities (portable loos) were not clean although they’re described as “cleaned daily”.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Views are ok

Disliked: It's basic. Which is ok, that's clear when booking. Rather a lot of money for a very basic site. Exposed. It's in the lakes, rain and wind is expected, but there is no shelter or places to pitch that aren't fully in the path of the wind. It's halfway up a very steep hill. This was not made in the least bit clear when booking. It's not level in the slightest. There are no flat pitches. The grass was mown to maybe 6" long.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent location and brilliant view There was lots of space available Clean facilities

Disliked: Very exposed on the tops of the hills but to be expected Very few amenities and facilities provided for the price - only portaloos and tub of drinking water The what3words location and location received via text do not take you to the right place. Must use the coordinates provided in the email

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Like being so close to Coniston after climbing The Old Man. Nice views. East to find. Path up isn’t as bad as people made out.

Disliked: Where to start. First of all the field is on a hill so slopes. The toilets had no toilet roll or hand sanitizer. The pile of rubbish next to the toilet left a lot to be desired. The couple that didn’t go to sleep until 5am next to us, playing their music, talking and slamming their car door all night meant an already poor night sleep was made worse. Field is a sheep field, so there is sheep poop everywhere as tons of sheep that don’t shut up. I’m all for cheap pitches, but this was just a money making opportunity. No care is given at all.

Liked: Stunning views of hills and distant sea. Quiet and out if the way, short drive to village which has cafes, shops and pubs. Perfect sun spot with walks nearby. Fairly small campsite (big enough for everyone to spread out).

Disliked: Portaloos got a bit smelly throughout the night - but to be expected and could have been a lot worse.
