  • Glamping site on a farm on the edge of the North Pennines
  • A 10-minute drive to Eden Valley; half an hour to the Lake District
  • Free-range eggs available; mobile kitchen/bathroom with a gas cooker
Bearing down on Cumbria for lakes, fells and waterfalls? Then, you’ll be in a real ripe spot for walking, cycling and ticking off mountain summits at Renison’s Farm. On the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District National Park half an hour’s drive away and the Vale of Eden 10 minutes away, this glamping site is in a peaceful patch well tucked away, but well within reach of beauty spots. Views are very sweet here, as the farm looks over the Lake District and there are livestock grazing in the fields. There’s plenty of peace to go around – and eggs too, as the site is part of a working farm with free-range hens, so there are always eggs to collect in the morning and pigs to feed. Here, you’ll be bedding down in Camp Brunhilda, a spacious wagon with a lovely kingsize bed. Next to the wagon is a private mobile kitchen and bathroom, including a gas cooker, sink, seating area, composting toilet and shower. The site is half an hour’s drive away from Penrith and 50 minutes from Keswick, both home to plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs. More locally, Gamblesby (five minutes’ drive) has a bus stop, while Kirkoswald (10 minutes) has two pubs. Please bear in mind that the site is half a mile up quite a bumpy track, unsuitable for very low-slung cars.

Local attractions

Thirsty for some water activities? You’ll be in a good spot, as the hike at Ashgill Force (half an hour’s drive) ends in waterfall views. Aira Force Waterfall (45 minutes) is another local waterfall, while Ullswater (45 minutes) in the Lake District delivers on the watersports front, with sailing, boat trips and a whole legion of other watercrafts ready for a captain to take over (canoes and kayaks included). It is the second-largest lake in England, after all. You might want to have a good rest in the eve, as there are many more activities that will elevate your heart rate, from the scenic hike at Hartside Pass (15 minutes) to taking on Blencathra (45 minutes), a northerly Lake District hill with six fells in total. Past Striding Edge, the mountain hike at Helvellyn (55 minutes) will put your legs to work some more, while the Eden Valley (10 minutes) has a combo of easier-going walking and cycling lanes as well as tougher hill climbs. Inject some history into your holiday… perhaps the medieval castle ruins at Lowther Castle & Gardens (35 minutes) or the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle (50 minutes) will give you the chills.
