Well, what a treat. A luxurious little corner of the Lake District that you can have all to yourself. Pop-up site The Bell Tent at Hayfield sits in a private meadow near Ulverston, and the only company you’re likely to have is the cows grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields. With a stylish interior kitted out with a proper bed, comfy sofa and ample storage, the bell tent is also supplied with pretty crockery and thoughtful extras like solar-powered night-lights and blankets to snuggle up under. Outside, the wooden decking is scented by lavender and a seating area with picnic table and benches lets you cosy up around the firepit to admire the views to Hoad Monument and The Old Man of Coniston. Kindling, firewood and a barbecue come as part of the package. A standalone wooden loo and shower are close by. A smattering of foodie pubs are within 20 minutes’ drive, and you can stock up on supplies in Ulverston (10 minutes’ drive), which also has a fish and chip shop as well as tea rooms.

Bell tent

Liked: The bell tent was an amazing venue, so picturesque with the best views. It is in a gated off area of a field which made it extra safe for my 4 year old. There is everything you could need to enjoy your time which makes it easy to just sit back and relax. The facilities on the camp site were very clean and not too far away. There are many family friendly things to do in the local area too, we enjoyed the ice cream farm and the Safari Zoo. Couldn’t have asked for a better night away!

Local attractions

The starting point for the Cumbrian Way long-distance trail and numerous other Lake District hikes, Ulverston (10 minutes’ drive) is also gateway to the sights of the Furness Peninsula, including endangered big cats and animal encounters at South Lakes Safari Zoo (10 minutes), and the 12th-century cloisters and visitor centre at Furness Abbey (15 minutes). Don’t overlook Barrow-in-Furness (20 minutes), a lively town with Victorian architecture and displays on the former steel and shipbuilding industries in The Dock Museum. For a day at the beach, head for the sand-and-shingle stretch at Bardsea for a paddle in Morecambe Bay, or Roanhead (both 10 minutes) for long walks in the dunes and views of the Lake District Fells. Catch the ferry across to Piel Island (20 minutes) to splash around on the beach and then walk up to its stately castle ruins. Turning north to the Lake District National Park, there are canoe, kayak and sailing adventures to be had on Coniston Water (20 minutes) and Lake Windermere (25 minutes), as well as steam boat cruises on the National Trust-owned Steam Yacht Gondola (35 minutes, summer only).
