  • Simple bell tents on a working farm in Cumbria’s Eden Valley
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Lake District; 25 minutes to Carlisle
  • Wild-style glamping on grass, with simple toilet/shower facilities
Located in the stunning Eden Valley, Stone Raise Farm is a great base from which to explore the fells, lakes and peaks of Cumbria. When you arrive, spacious bell tents are already pitched and just waiting for you to settle in – all you need to do is get your bedding installed on the beds and get into that holiday vibe as fast as possible. This is wild-style camping rather than full-service glamping (simple facilities include compost toilets and a solar shower) with just a handful of bell tents on a working farm with stunning country views, yet reasonably close to Carlisle’s handy supermarkets (25 minutes’ drive) for anything that you’ve forgotten to bring with you. Once you get down to the serious business of exploring the countryside in this handsome corner of Cumbria, you’ll find riverside walks along the Eden and a choice of national parks to visit. The mountains, hiking routes and watersports of the Lake District are less than 30 minutes’ drive away, while the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty serves up rugged walking and cycling routes over moorland to dramatic waterfalls. You can barbecue on site, but if you don’t want to cook there are village pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, where you’ll get a warm reception, local beers and comfort food.

Bell tent

Liked: Ready to use . Quite polite owners

Disliked: Toilet facilities were lacking , although camping doesn’t constitute much in terms of a toilet. The portaloo leaning downhill and the little office unit used as a shower could do with improvements. That being said it is camping and it is a nice feature to have that as an availability.

Bell tent

Liked: Good size tent Good location Great that the air beds were provided and basic but necessity facilities. Very friendly owners and cannot do enough to help.

Disliked: Very long grass around the tent and portaloo quite smelly and unhygienic.

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed the tents and your stay. The long grass is waiting to be cut for silage, super important for our cattle to eat in winter! Rest assured we will be cutting the whole field in the next couple of weeks. I’m sorry the loo wasn’t up to what you would have liked. We’ve been taking care in the hot weather to do extra cleaning so it’s disappointing if that hadn’t made a difference. I’m looking into a different style portaloo, although we are limited by the temporary pop up nature of our site. Hope to see you again sometime 🙂

Star bell tent

Liked: This place is just magical! What a stunning field… a glorious meadow with long grasses and wild flowers-so wonderful for the bees. The tent was really gorgeous (I would like one of these for myself!) and an air bed was provided that kept its shape all night (rare!). A really stunning, peaceful setting. I wish we had more time to stay more than one night. The little cabin with washing facilities was cute and we had a roaring fire with logs that we bought for £5. Emma and her husband were very friendly and the communication was immediate.

Local attractions

Historic Carlisle (25 minutes) is known as ‘the great border city’; it’s well worth a visit to tour its medieval cathedral and mighty castle and get a feel for the history of the region at the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. Racing fans can have a flutter on the horses at Carlisle Racecourse (15 minutes), and if you’d quite like some gentle physical activity yourself, there are golf courses also within 15 minutes’ drive of Stone Raise Farm. If you prefer to exercise in less manicured surroundings, head straight for the Lake District National Park, with its hiking and mountain-biking options on peak and forest trails. Keen to get out on the water? Explore Ullswater (35 minutes) on a boat cruise, or hire a kayak to explore its scenic shoreline. Take the kids dinghy sailing on the lake at Talkin Tarn Country Park (25 minutes), or to spot endangered red pandas at the Lake District Wildlife Park (45 minutes). To combine family walks cleverly with a history lesson, hike a length of Hadrian’s Wall and learn about Cumbrian life 2,000 years ago at the Roman Army Museum (both half an hour’s drive).
