  • Quiet glamping site overlooking the Pennines and two wildlife ponds
  • A 20-minute drive from Carlisle and RSPB Geltsdale
  • Wooden ensuite pods with space for up to four; decking and picnic area
Looking for hikes along Hadrian's Wall and Pennine explores with an extra layer of comfort? Cairn Meadow Pods, a small glamping site set deep in the Cumbrian countryside, could be just the job. This rural spot is surrounded by lots of water – there are two large nature ponds on site (hence the pods being named after wading birds) and a river runs just alongside too. Slightly further afield, meanwhile, you can get to the Lake District National Park in about half an hour's drive, while the sand dunes and salt flats of the Solway Firth are about 40 minutes to the west. Back at base, you'll have plenty of room to relax in your furnished ensuite pod, where there's a double bed and convertible sofa that together can sleep up to four. A nifty bathroom is also included, and there's a small kitchenette with essentials like a microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge – just the thing for a bit of light cooking. Outside, the pods have wooden decking where you can take in the views; there are also picnic areas and plenty of spaces for car parking. Cairn Meadow Pods is on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 15 minutes' drive to the south of the market town of Brampton, an attractive spot just two miles from Hadrian's Wall. The much larger town of Carlisle (20 minutes) is also close by for a wider range of amenities.

Moorhen camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: The pod itself was immaculate, very clean and there was a nice little bottle of wine, beer and some sweets for my daughter upon arrival which was a lovely gesture. The area is very peaceful and quiet, set in a lovely location, we even had some cows for neighbours in the field behind us which was nice too. My daughter is 4 and absolutely loved playing outside on the big field we took lots of outdoor toys and she even made friends with some kids from the pod next door but one and they all played really well together. Really liked the fact that there was a table and chairs on the decking for sitting outside the pod too, with an umbrella incase of rain even though we had plenty of sunshine. We all had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend staying here. There is no WiFi here but we didn't mind that at all.

Disliked: The only dislikes I had were the sofa bed, it may be fine four younger kids to stay on but the metal frame of the bed is so hard it really was awful to sleep on. It's comfortable as a couch just not as a bed. Also the shower as great as it is having one in the pod the hot water didn't last very long so it was really hard trying to get the little one clean before the temperature changed. Other than this we had a great stay here.

Curlew camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Excellent pod, has everything you need for a family of 4 including cutlery/crockery. However take bedding and towels if there’s more than 2 going i.e kids as you only get enough for 2 people. Beautifully laid out pod. Used every part of it. Huge storage capacity under the main double bed. Gorgeous scenery to wake up to. Peaceful and quiet. Absolutely lovely especially when weather holds up. Nice to have gotten a welcome drink and a little milk in the fridge for a cuppa when we arrived. We didn’t use the fire-pit but just make sure to bring your own wood/coal and firelighters, lovely private bench next to it to use. Seating and table on pod decking for 4. Very close to Carlisle in terms of food/shops etc. Also plenty of pubs nearby and streams to walk along. Pooley bridge is a great day out which isn’t too far and there’s the Airaforce waterfall which we drove to. Lots of outdoor fun nearby or within 1 hour away which was great for travelling on days out including Scotland for the day or down to Keswick/Windermere. Would definitely return here again, very sad to now be home.

Disliked: Gorgeous pods and fully heated. But by gosh was it warm! Maybe an instruction manual to turn this down a bit or off and on when needed. Shower is also run off a hot water tank so unless your very fast you need to leave 10-15 mins between each hot shower for it to fill. Feel the bathroom is missing a tiny window just to let steam out and brighten it up slightly but still a stunning well equipped bathroom and pod. Don’t expect to get takeaways as it’s a little off the main path, if your not one to cook there’s plenty of places to eat in Carlisle about 20 mins away just be sure to research and book in advance! No wifi however data usage was fine. No connection problems for us. But put the phone down and enjoy the outdoors.

Local attractions

Cairn Meadow Pods is set in the aptly-named Eden Valley, a lush expanse of green countryside with plenty of walks and bike trails to explore. There's also a lot of wildlife in the area, from birdwatching at RSPB Geltsdale to fishing opportunities and woodland walks at Talkin Tarn Country Park (15 minutes' drive). For sport and leisure, look eastwards towards the hiking paths that crisscross the high peaks of the Pennines, or take the M6 south towards the Lake District's northern reaches for paddling on Ullswater (30 minutes) and Derwentwater (45 minutes). Lazonby (20 minutes) also has a great open-air swimming pool (a far cry from the Med, but still much warmer than swimming in the Lakes). History and heritage are up next, and there's plenty to be found around here – Hadrian's Wall (15 minutes), Carlisle Castle (20 minutes) and the Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) are all nearby for interesting and educational days out, as are the rather remarkable ruins of Lanercost Priory (20 minutes).
