  • Grassy Cumbria pop-up farm site by a slowly flowing beck
  • A 20-minute drive to the edge of the Lake District; a mile from a zoo
  • Half a mile from a pub and 10 minutes' drive from the beach
Hear that? It's the call of coastal Cumbria, and it's telling you to book a break in the stunning South Lakes… And what better place to do it than Scale Bank Camping? This peaceful site is set on a working family farm 20 minutes' drive from the edge of the Lake District National Park and 10 minutes from the coast. You're truly in the best of both worlds here, as all sorts of attractive watery views are within easy reach. This is a simple pop-up site with amenities that include running water, portable toilets and waste disposal. You can also hire firepits (supplied with logs, kindling, matches and firelighters) once you arrive on site, to help keep you warm at night. Other than that, you're left to your own devices to plan the kind of break you want, whether that involves spending relaxed days on site, following the course of the slowly flowing beck to hidden woodland coves or hunting for birds and beasties in the woods. Scale Bank Camping is two miles north of Dalton-in-Furness, a market town with a railway station, a public leisure centre and lots of shops. It's also half a mile from a popular local pub where you can sip real ales by cosy logburning stoves; it's accessed via a gate just opposite the pitching field. Meanwhile, 51 acres of animal explores await a mile away down the road at South Lakes Safari Zoo, a great family-friendly attraction that can be easily reached on foot.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Wonderful stay on a peaceful sight. Clean portaloo's on sight and lovely pitch beside the river. Great added bonus of the fire pit which was dropped off at the pitch with wood etc... Nice pub about a 1 minute walk from the site. Really close to South Lakes Safari Zoo and a great place to stay to explore the South Lakes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was great, lovely flat ground to camp and amazing surroundings with a stream running through the campsite which the kids loved and a pub across the road. The zoo was just a 5 minute drive away and local town not much further. The owners were fantastic and greeted us on arrival, lovely and friendly!

Disliked: Nothing, hopefully we will be back next summer

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely setting, very welcoming hosts. Little one was very pleased to get to feed the goats and pet the lambs. Tent pitch was newly mowed, plenty of space for tent and for playing.

Disliked: Peacocks across the road (NOTHING to do with the campsite) woke us up before 5am, which was not ideal, but then again, it is the countryside!

Liked: A lovely secluded site. This is a basic site with a very clean porta-loo and a cold-water tap a little walk away. The kids loved it, we loved it and was a great base to explore from.

Local attractions

For active times, check the forecast, pack proper kit and prepare to climb fells like Orrest Head (40 minutes' drive), just above Windermere, or head to Whicham (35 minutes) to scale the heights of Black Combe. For further sporty options, you might like to hire a paddleboard or wind-powered vessel at Coniston Boating Centre (35 minutes) and head to Go Ape Grizedale (35 minutes) for an excellent treetop obstacle course. Of course, there are other ways to take in the natural splendour of the Lakes – a trip aboard a steamer in Ullswater (an hour), going sightseeing around Aira Force waterfall (an hour and 10 minutes), or riding the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (45 minutes) are all good ways forward if you're looking for spectacular scenery without too much physical exertion. Finally, to learn a little about the area's past, turn to the timeworn ruins of Furness Abbey (10 minutes), the industrial heritage of The Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness (15 minutes) or admire the magnificent house and gardens at Muncaster Castle (45 minutes).
