  • Wild camping on a Cumbria goat farm in Ravenstonedale
  • A 15-minute drive to Kirkby Stephen for shops; 20 minutes to Sedbergh
  • Farm shop on site for local meat, cheese and ice creams
What a setting for walkers and cyclists, edging the Westmorland Dales in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A family-run affair, Piper Hole Goat Farm has a handful of grassy pitches a five-minute drive from Ravenstonedale village in Cumbria. The farm is holistically run, with signposted walks through wildflower meadows in early summer, looking over goats grazing in the fields and sheep out on the fell. As the animals roam pretty freely, please check in with staff on arrival for parking info and directions to your pitch. Goat walks are available – just speak to site staff for details. You’ll probably want to get out and about on the moors as quickly as possible, but don’t forget all those pretty market towns like Sedbergh and Richmond, where you can potter around farmers’ markets and indie shops. And with the north’s reputation for good grub, real ales and artisan gins, it’s well worth checking out the pubs in Ravenstonedale too. Back on site, the pitches may be simple (amenities include toilets and a communal fridge) but they're well set for some tasty treats. The on-site farm shop sells ice cream, cheese and soap made from goats’ milk, along with other handy bits and bobs like local meat for barbecues (bring your own from home). You can also stock up on any other essentials at the supermarkets in Kirkby Stephen.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location location location! About ten minutes drive from Tebay. Nice quiet surroundings, beautiful farmland and scenery. Excellent hosts, really helpful, genuinely nice people! There are male and female showers, even though pitchup doesn’t list them. Two camping fields to choose from, which are both level. There’s a couple of honesty shops, and a really handy kitchen and dining area, which has a microwave, kettle, fridge and washing machine. We travelled with a baby and an eight year old, and we had no issues. There are lots of goats, if you’re interested. The owner even sold bacon sandwiches one morning. We would love to return!

Disliked: It is dark at night, and a good torch is essential. Not really a negative, but do remember to pack one! No wifi, but you do get a good 4g signal. Pitchup also states that campfires are disallowed, which isn’t true. Most campers had campfires, so don’t forget yours.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice warm shower & clean toilet block; decent basic kitchen facilities & inside area to relax; small amount of refreshments available with honesty box; stunning views; friendly hosts; walking distance to three pubs; cooked breakfast available in the morning

Disliked: Finding a flat pitch may have been hard were it any busier - not much that can be done in the hills

Liked: This is a small pop-up site with good facilities. There is a lounge area to stay in if the weather turns bad. The campsite is fairly level and there is plenty of space between tents. The owners are very friendly and sell some lovely homemade soaps and cheeses. This is the second time we have been and we will definitely be back!
