  • Site in a wildlife centre in the Forest of Bowland’s Ribble Valley
  • Just under 10 minutes’ drive from Chipping and 40 from Preston
  • Petting zoo, play area, café and pond; marked walking trails on site
For a family escape with an educational twist consider a stay at Bowland Escapes, in the middle of a wildlife centre that aims to get kids up to speed on conservation and animal welfare. This place is topnotch for groups with younger members keen on cuddling creatures like lambs and baby chicks, or seeing more exotic breeds such as white wallabies, emus and water buffaloes. Other activities with a farmyard focus available at this spot in the Forest of Bowland Area of Natural Beauty include tractor and trailer rides (in the school holidays and on weekends) as well as wildlife walks inside the lush green Ribble Valley with fells and woodland all around. Named paths aimed at kids and adults alike range from the Cartoon and Totem Pole trails to the Bluebell Walk. A play area is also on site. If you’d rather sit and watch the wildlife, a café is opposite the pond at the park where birds fly in to take titbits from the feeder; for other ways to spy winged critters in their natural habitat, you could also wander beside the nearby Hodder river. After lunch at the café, spark up the barbecue for dinner – local produce is plentiful at the nearby farm shop. Another café plus a couple of pubs are in Chipping just over five minutes’ drive away if you’d prefer to spend less time cooking and more time spreading out next to the firepit back on base after a meal made by someone else. Bowland Escapes has shower and toilet blocks and washing-up stations with hot water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely place to stay, variety of accommodation types, and looked like there was a tippee events place for wedding etc. The animal zoo was amazing, loads to do for children for £12 each, could easily spend all day there. Bathrooms/kitchen areas spotless. Lovely reception area.

Disliked: Although the camping field had its positives ie no restricted pitch sizes, there were a few things that could make it even better. Could invest in levelling the site as on an angle. Appreciate the point about no cars on the grass which protects it but could think about widening the existing shingle path so you can drive down to drop stuff off or even park opposite your tent. Also the grass needed a mow but appreciate it was wet which isnt ideal mowing weather. Bathroom door needs a handle as very difficult to open just with the lock button.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, helpful staff. A few peacocks joined us by the fire.

Disliked: As far a I could see, not many pitches and only two toilets/showers (although clean and well maintained). Had lots of room in the spring, but in busy summer months it could be a bit crowded.

From the manager: Thankyou James we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. P.S. We only allow a maximum of 5 tents so there is plenty room for all to relax and enjoy :)

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: Loved our stay in camping pods. Pods are small so with older children having camping bunk bed was handy. Pod area has fantastic fire pits and each pod has trees around if for added privacy. Kids loved the playground and exploring the woods and finding water buffalo!

From the manager: Thank you for your great pod review :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Benches on the field, lovely toilet and shower facilities, compact site. Great for star gazing

Disliked: Could have done with a tap to fill larger water container, but not too far to get water from the sink

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved this campsite. Facilities were fab. Mixture of fields with their own toilets, sinks etc. Loved being able to hear the owls and the river etc at night lying in my tent. Stars were amazing to watch. Firepit rental was great. The Wild Boar Park was fantastic. My children (ages 10 and 13) loved the interactivity.

Disliked: Nothing... was such a nice little place!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great little campsite with good facilities - washing up stations and toilet/shower blocks very nearby. There are only 5 pitches and each one has it's own picnic table.Right on the edge of the animal park so lots of wildlife around the campsite - we had peacocks join us for breakfast.

Disliked: While the showers were great, they were more like a wet room and I don't think the drains cope very well as everything is off grid - on the second morning one of the bathrooms was under a couple of cm of water. There is WiFi signal near the pods but none and no signal in the campsite so bear that in mind.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you Kat for your 10/10 review, and whilst there was a couple of niggles this obviously didn't spoil your holiday break. I think we are now on top of the drainage in the new shower area so all should be fine and unfortunately as we are so rural the internet isn't great, but generally adequate for basic tasks, and you like other guests probably appreciate a bit of time away from constant messages and social media etc ;) Thanks again and hope to see you in 2024

Liked: We loved our stay! Campsite and farm park were really friendly and plenty to do for the kids at the farm. Surrounding area is beautiful!! Campsite is lovely and the facilities are one of the best I've seen, clean and well looked after! We camped this time but would love to try out a camping pod or the roundhouse next time. Really lovely weekend had by all We will definitely be back :)

Local attractions

There may be much to keep you at this wildlife park but family-friendly activities are all around the region too, with the rare breeds of cattle at Cobble Hey Farm & Gardens 25 minutes’ drive away and the rainy-day workshops and events at Barton Grange Garden Centre within half an hour. If it’s sunny, Brock Bottoms Picnic Site (25 minutes) is an excellent spot for an outdoor meal – followed up with an ice cream made courtesy of the milk from the dairy cows at Mrs Dowsons Farm half an hour away. Famous places for the kids are also within an hour’s drive, like the rides at the Blackpool seaside; for grownups, the fell walks of the Lake District are the same distance away.
