  • Family-friendly organic farm site in the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Eastbourne beach and Seaford beach
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; bags of wood sold on site
Chill out at Wayfaring Down Farm, a family-friendly site that’s part of an organic farm in the South Downs National Park. Hugging the lower slopes of the national park and 20 minutes’ drive from Eastbourne, this site is a wildlife haven (free from pesticides and herbicides) with birdsong in the background, wildflowers growing and rabbits, foxes, badgers and deer often passing through. This is a pretty spacious place to unwind with fields, a vegetable garden and a car park for your car. In the evenings, you may want to wind down with a campfire or a barbecue (so long as it’s raised off the ground). If so, the site sells wood bags containing wood, kindling, cardboard and lighters so that you can get it rolling. Once you’re in, you may want to leave the car behind for a bit, as there are plenty of walks that can be accessed directly from the site. Or, if you’ve got a sudden desire for the salt and sand, the car may come in handy, as there are several beaches within reach, including Eastbourne beach (20 minutes’ drive), Cuckmere Haven (25 minutes) and Seaford beach (20 minutes). You may want to plan a stop at one of several supermarkets five minutes’ drive away from the site or perhaps pay a visit to one of the local watering holes (there are several pubs within five minutes’ drive of the site too). However, as this is a leave-no-trace site, guests will need to take any rubbish they bring back to the site away with them when they leave to ensure that the wildlife is left undisturbed.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: 1) not aloud to drive car to place of pitch. You need to use a wheel barrow to carry your stuff. Even though there is a clear track where vehicles have driven. Ok, if have a small tent and no gear but ridiculous if you have anything more. 2). The area is covered with thistles etc so no good for kiddies playing around. 3). Not aloud to use own logs, have to pay £10 for a carrier bag of twigs. See pic. 4) Have to book to use shower, and pay £2. 5) No waste facilities, have to take away with you and dispose at recycling centre. Wouldn’t mind if it was cheap, but paid £102 for two adult and 4 Childrens for two nights. I’ve paid a lot less for a proper campsite with proper amenities.

From the manager: We would prefer that you had never come at all. You hid your rubbish in the toilet, and left rubbish on your huge pitch that you had all to yourself. How sad is that, and what a terrible example to set your children. I feel sorry for them.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Amazing location to explore the south downs. Eastbourne a short drove away to take the kids to the beach and do mini golf and we were treated to the Eastbourne air show on the sea front too. Bio toilets worked well and had a good feel factor too.

Disliked: would have liked a sink to wash my face and a mirror.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Everything!! What a magical experience we had. Very serene, scenic place with great views of mountains, hills, valleys complemented with horses, sheep, cows and many butterflies in view. All possible to be viewed in comfort of many shaded trees in very hot sun and also open areas when it was bit cooler. What a spectacular view of sunrise we all had in the morning at 5.20am. Liz the owner was very welcoming and also helped us with some basic stuff that we missed to bring. Lots of privacy was there too and there were so many butterflies in the pristine natural area. The pitch was custom flat built on an inclined hill with really amazing views. Wish we had stayed more.

Disliked: Absolutely Nothing to dislike.

From the manager: Thanks Amit, it was a pleasure to host you and your family. Liz :)
