Hols near lakes are – quite rightly – all the rage, so how about settling down for a stint surrounded by three of them? Ashburnham Place Camping is a smashing south-facing site close to the East Sussex coastline and natural havens of High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This spot is also home to more than a little outstanding beauty of its own – these landscaped grounds have a walled garden, secret grotto and several woodland and lakeside trails. Ashburnham Place Camping is a sizeable spot indeed, so bring your bike along if you're looking to explore all its scenic nooks and crannies. Fancy a bracing swim? Get down to the lake for a refreshing (and fully lifeguarded) outdoor dip. Feel free to bring your kayak, canoe or other launch, too. Back on dry land, you can sort a kickabout at the five-a-side pitches or fix a game of volleyball (nets provided). Staying on an English country estate comes with a massive range of perks, but for foodies tucking into a scrummy cream tea at the on-site café (housed in an orangery, no less) is pretty sure to be a major highlight. You can also drop by the on-site food shop or sort a barbecue (please make sure that everything is safely off the grass if grilling your own grub).

Local attractions

History buffs rejoice –1066 country is within easy reach of Ashburnham Place Camping. The ancient ramparts of Battle Abbey, where the Norman Conquest of England kicked off, are a 10-minute drive away. Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) is another historic must-see: this gorgeous red-brick fortress dates back to the 15th century and has over 300 acres of lovingly landscaped grounds to discover. Want to feel the sand between your toes? Jaunts to Bexhill-on-Sea will set you back a breezy 20 minutes; Pevensey Bay's quieter shingle beach is also nearby (20 minutes). Swing by Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve if heading to or from that latter spot – wading birds flock to this wildlife hub and can often be spotted scurrying between the reed beds. Younger kids joining you on stays at Ashburnham Place Camping may well be interested in tiddler-pleasing attractions like Drusillas Park (a zoo) or Smugglers Adventure (both 20 minutes). There's also a Go Ape on hand at Bedgebury for teens (30 minutes) – adults unwilling to get geared up and scale the trees themselves can admire their progeny from below in the peaceful surrounds of Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest.
