  • Romantic shepherd’s hut with a sculpture park in the Essex countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to the Essex Way and historical houses further out
  • Firewood provided and tennis court on site; walks and cycles nearby
Whether it’s eves on the veranda, showers under the eco shower hanging from the tree or a firepit snuggle when the sun goes down, the romantic shepherd’s hut at South Park is a rather splendid place to stay in the Essex countryside, 15 miles from the M11. Step through the oak front door and look around… there’s a pair of Venetian-style mirrors, stained glass and a pane on the door so that you’ll be able to spy on the sculpture and acres of historic parkland outside, designed in the 18th century - just the place for a bug hunt or spotting red kites nesting and deer or partridges sometimes strolling by in the mornings. Perhaps you might want to crack open the wine, fizz or champagne provided and pair it with a cake and tea of your choice. With a microwave, toaster, kettle and stainless steel sink, it’s easy to prep your own food. Other facilities include shelves of books, a chess board, board games and cards for quiet times and a designated clubhouse with a shower, mains loo and basin. Plus, complimentary firewood is provided and barbecues are permitted. The marked footpaths around the site (and the map provided) will help you to pick out cool features such as trees and places of historic interest, or you could take your pick of nearby fieldside footpaths, woodland walks and a cycling route once used by the Tour de France. To continue the activities, the site has an AstroTurf tennis court or you could switch to horseback at the local stables.

Local attractions

From walks to vineyards and historic houses, there's plenty to dabble in locally… perhaps set off on the 82-mile Essex Way from Rayne (10 minutes’ drive)? Call into the craft studio in the stables at Hylands House (35 minutes)? Watch the jousting at Hedingham Castle (25 minutes)? Another historic place, such as Layer Marney Tower (40 minutes), Ingatestone Hall (45 minutes) or the Tiptree Tea Room, Museum and Jam Shop (half an hour and all about the workings of a top jam business)? A National Trust property, such as Paycocke's House and Garden (20 minutes) or Lavenham Guildhall (50 minutes) are another historical option, or other properties have an invitation to view days and regular events, such as the Abbey Estate Livery (25 minutes). Wine aficionados might choose to tour the Essex vineyards around Purleigh (40 minutes), Felsted (10 minutes), Hedingham (20 minutes) and Coggeshall (20 minutes). Art fans can indulge their inner painter with ceramics at the studio in Great Dunmow (10 minutes), while history buffs can continue their streak with a visit to Colchester Castle (40 minutes) or one of the best-preserved Tudor villages in Britain, Lavenham (50 minutes) and its delicious high street ice cream parlour.
