Outdoor aficionados have a proper treat in store at Surrey Lakes Glamping, where high-end, ready-pitched canvas accommodation is set against a natural backdrop of woodlands, fields and water. In season, all kinds of floral life – including campions, bluebells, cow parsley and foxgloves – springs up in this quiet spot, further enhancing the all-round prettiness. Fancy more? Around a thousand other species are on display at the Winkworth Arboretum next door. These units are smartly done up inside and out, fitted out with a comfy double bed, armchairs, rugs, candles, fairy lights and a private firepit. It's a mishmash of rugged and cosy that really works, with an overall self-sustained vibe (the units are electricity-free) that's offset by a few creature comforts (like gadget charging and a Nespresso machine in the common area). This glamping site also has well-maintained flushing toilets and hot showers a short walk from the tents. This is a quiet spot, with a strict no-noise policy in force after 11pm. Other than that, you're pretty free to do as you please when staying here – nothing creates a sense of freedom quite like waking up on the edge of lakes and woodlands that are yours to explore… Off-base, snug pub lunches, dinners and drinks are sorted at the local pub (five minutes' drive), a wood-beamed inn surrounded by footpaths in the nearby village of Hascombe.

If the slower pace of plant life is to your liking, branch out and try other leafy local spots like Vann Garden (15 minutes' drive) or Tilford Cottage Garden (25 minutes). For more wild landscapes, you could head to Box Hill (40 minutes) in the north of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where far-reaching views over the green countryside are well worth the ascent. There's also Frensham Great Pond (30 minutes), an attractive small lake surrounded by heathland where you can fish, take a warm-weather swim or tuck into a picnic on its small sandy beach. If you're here to see some heritage, there's Waverley Abbey (25 minutes), the old market town of Godalming (10 minutes) or the castles in Guildford (15 minutes) and Farnham (30 minutes).
