  • Simple and wardened accommodation in a converted and listed barn
  • On the North Downs Way and Sustrans Route 22
  • Shared sleeping area, modern kitchen, local pubs and scenic walks
Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse has simple overnight accommodation in south-east England for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, on a site with with a strong environmental emphasis. The bunkhouse provides wardened accommodation, similar to a youth hostel but a tad more basic. It's in west Surrey on the North Downs Way and Sustrans Cycle Route 22, between Guildford and Farnham at a point not served by any youth hostels. The barn's sleeping area has two areas with bunk beds and a third with sleeping platforms; there's no space for tents outside. Guests should bring their own sleeping bag. The barn is an old listed building, sympathetically restored to be environmentally friendly and so that guests can see the traditional and sustainable construction methods used. Facilities on site include rainwater harvesting, solar electricity, solar hot water, a lockable cycle storage shed (designed by cyclists), and a communal kitchen and a shower-room. The site does its best to cater for people with disabilities.

Liked: Lovely place, super-friendly wardens - all volunteers - who did their best to ensure my stay was as comfortable as possible. Lots of nice touches such as tea/coffee/condiments if you have forgotten anything and a micro shop for essentials like porridge and toothpaste. There's a small kitchen and dining area next to the barn. (There are no shops nearby.) Lots of games and local info etc with a very nice pub next door for meals and to meet the locals. Everything is very eco-centric so you get a discount if you arrive by bike of £3 a night! Even without this, you likely won't find anywhere cheaper in this part of the world. You will be sharing the space with others if there are other people there but I was the only one when I stayed.

Disliked: It is quite chilly in the barn but if you ask, you can have extra blankets and hire a sleeping bag. The shower is right next to the toilet so the floor does get a bit wet. Also you can hear noise from A31 if wind in the wrong direction.

Local attractions

This is a top spot to bunk down for a night if you’re on a long-distance ramble or bike ride. If you fancy stopping for a little longer there are loads more walks and rides to be had through the Surrey Hills, including the Christmas Pie cycle route from Farnham to Guildford, and a series of circular walks from Puttenham. More eco-conscious days out can be had by hiring rowing boats from Farncombe Boat House or taking a horse-drawn narrowboat trip from Godalming. Or you might set out again on two wheels or two feet to visit local landmarks: the walled gardens and 16th-century house of Loseley Park are three miles away, and it’s worth dropping in to the Watts Gallery artists’ village enroute. With all this hoofing about it’s likely you’ll have earned yourself a beer or two, so it’s a fine plan to set out for the Hogs Back Brewery three miles away in Tongham, where you can see the ale making in action and sample the wares.
