  • Quiet family-friendly site on a smallholding in the High Weald
  • Ardingly Reservoir 15 minutes’ drive; Brighton half an hour
  • Firepits, communal kitchen and picnic benches; freshly laid eggs sold
Looking for a site where you can take long strolls with your dog and maybe let the kids interact with farmyard animals? Deaks Acres, a five-minute drive from the West Sussex village of Cuckfield, might just be the place for you. Just on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this family-friendly site is part of a smallholding with goats, horses and geese, so there’s always a furry (or feathered) creature nearby for your kids to pet or help feed. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead. Each pitch has its own firepit for cosy campfire evenings; if you’re in the mood for making new friends, there's also an area around a large bonfire for guests to gather and socialise. For a fabulous breakfast you surely can't beat scrambled eggs made with eggs from the resident hens. The communal field kitchen is the place to cook these – it's also got a barbecue and a washing up area. For other provisions, the petrol station just across the roundabout on the A272 (10 minutes’ walk) has a small shop, and Haywards Heath (five minutes’ drive) has several supermarkets. Of course, you might opt for a cooked meal from a traditional pub, of which there are several in Cuckfield. There are heaps of walks and bridleways to explore directly from the site, or you can drive to Ardingly Reservoir (15 minutes) for a waterside trail, an activity centre with paddleboards and kayaks, and a dog park you can hire by the half-hour to let your canine buddy run free. For a day at the beach, Brighton is a half hour’s drive away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was great for kids and their parents. Our children were able to have fun with the animals on their own whilst close to the camp. The facilities were clean. We were able to choose our own pitches and have car next to tent. Each pitch had its own bench and fire pit. The view was lovely too. Lovely, friendly owners who were great to chat with.

Disliked: The sign to the campsite wasn't very clear.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was a very relaxed space. A lot of trust in the campers, which was lovely. The animals on site were great, especially if you have young children. As the site is so small you can meet other campers if that is your thing. Owners were friendly and provided all that was asked for.

Disliked: Nothing, will definitely be coming back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The place was quite small which made it feel safe and secure. Very friendly atmosphere. Picnic tables and fire pits provided for each pitch. Very clear toilets and shower. Lovely owner who let my children spent most of the time with the animals and help to care for them. It was my first camping but it will definitely not be last.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The set up of the campsite was well thought out. It has everything you need and more. Showers and toilets were clean. The extra touches like the fire pits, picnic tables at each pitch were great. Our son really enjoyed visiting the farm area, meeting the kittens, pony and other animals. The owners were very approachable and accommodating. It’s a little hidden treasure! We will definitely be back.
