Like the idea of waking up to far-reaching views over the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Then a stay at family-owned Stonerocks Farm might be just the ticket. In addition to a spectacular landscape of gentle hills and open fields, this dog-friendly site (a five-minute drive from the West Sussex village of Bolney) has luxury accommodation in the form of fully furnished bell tents. What more could the modern glamper want? Occupying a large grassy field, the five-metre bell tents are well spaced from one another, guaranteeing a feeling of utmost privacy during your holiday and plenty of space for kids to run around in. You might bump into fellow guests at the communal shower (with plenty of hot water), but for any other ablutions, each tent comes with its own private basin. And a private composting toilet, too. Bed linen is provided for the comfortable double bed. If you’re travelling as a family, up to two more single beds can be added to each tent, though you’ll have to bring your own air mattress and bed linen for these. Oh, and don’t forget to bring towels for everyone. Colourful and stylish floor cushions add a cosy vibe, as does the rustic furniture, supported on tree-trunk legs. You can spend the evening admiring the sun as it sets over the hills of South Downs National Park, or getting the campfire going in time for dinner. There’s a convenience store (and a pub…) in Bolney, or larger supermarkets in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill (both 15 minutes).

Local attractions

You’re in the middle of a renowned sparkling-wine area here, so spend some time exploring local producers such as Bolney Wine Estate (five minutes’ drive), Court Garden Vineyard (20 minutes) or Artelium Wine Estate (20 minutes). All these wineries arrange tours of their vineyards, plus tastings. The gardens at Leonardslee (10 minutes) are the perfect spot for a woodland walk amid seasonal colour, including bluebells, camellias and rhododendrons. There is also plenty of wildlife to see here: you can visit a wallaby enclosure, check out the free-roaming deer and try to catch a glimpse of kingfishers and herons by the ponds. More winged creatures await at Huxley’s Birds of Prey Centre and Gardens (15 minutes), where regular displays take place around a central lawn with plenty of seating. It’s also possible to book private experiences like a hawk walk or a raptor afternoon.
