  • Small and peaceful holiday park on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Half an hour’s drive to Tintagel Castle; walk to The Camel Trail
  • Pub and village shop 10 minutes’ walk away; horse riding school nearby
Those seeking peaceful Cornwall breaks with perhaps a few bike rides and plenty of Cornish cream teas, gather around. Rivermead Holidays is a small, peaceful holiday park just outside of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Designed for couples and small families (no group bookings are permitted), the site specialises in fully-equipped self-catering accommodation. If the idea of homecooked meals and plenty of fresh Cornish air tempting enough already, just take a look at its central location 20 minutes’ drive from Bodmin, half an hour from Tintagel Castle and 35 minutes from the Eden Project. A 10-minute walk from the moorland village of St Breward too, it won’t take you long at all to source supplies in the village shop and post office or track down the tasty food in the cosy traditional pub. Don’t doubt that you’ll be peckish at times, what with the moors being so close by with their brooks and seemingly endless walks and the nearest beach being under 10 miles away. Hit up the Camel Trail at the bottom of the village of Wenford Bridge too; handily, there’s cycle hire at a café in the village, plus a car park. Horse riding activities are available in the village for those who fancy getting out on hooves rather than wheels. There are plenty of perks to staying at Rivermead Holidays, since the area is much quieter than the lively north and south coasts. The site is also well-equipped facilities-wise. It has a laundry room on site with two washing machines, a tumble dryer, iron, ironing board and a hoover.

Local attractions

Up on Bodmin Moor (from five minutes’ drive), your moorland walks might pass by Doc Martin or Poldark filming locations, including Ross Poldark’s home. Follow up the strolls with a steam train trip on the heritage Bodmin & Wenford Railway from Bodmin General Station (20 minutes) or beeline straight for the coast… Surfers, wannabe historians and foodies will all be pleased with the sweet spots along the sea. There’s Boscastle’s (25 minutes) harbour and The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. The clifftop castle of Tintagel Castle (half an hour) has a grand footbridge and a cave rumoured to have been inhabited by the wizard Merlin. Surf’s up at Polzeath beach (35 minutes). Padstow (35 minutes) has lush sandy beaches too, but watersports also take place on the Camel Estuary. If you’d prefer a spot of freshwater fishing, cast out your line at Colliford Lake (25 minutes). As for the Eden Project (35 minutes), those rainforest biomes are really a treat for all appreciators of plants, as well as adrenaline seekers who can’t turn down a zipwire adventure (over the biomes, no less).
