  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Richard the farmer is lovely, very accommodating and full of advice for things to do. Great views of Helman Tor. Plenty of space, nice clean loos and warm water for washing up.

Disliked: Unfortunately the ground was quite wet from all the rain this week but there is a good solid path, a tractor on hand and some good advice on where to park and how to get good traction!

From the manager: Thank you Niki for your review Yes the view of helman tor is outstanding and you did some great walks around the coast I am always here and give good advice were to pitch in wet conditions The field is still in good shape as drains well Hope to see you soon Happy camping Richard

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Arrived 1.55hrs early, was not a problem! Advised to move to the bottom of the field as it was less sodden. Offered wood for fire pit although we chose not to. Was making our meal when a tractor appeared in front of us bearing a portaloo which was placed near to our camper. What better service could you ask for? A beautiful rural place to stay, with everything you need! Would definitely recommend and will return.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice open feild with lots of space and places to pick to pitch up. Close to the Eden project.

Disliked: No proper toilets. Only proterloos. The showers were so small. Only about 60cm of dry space to get dressed. Water pressure was awful and kept going cold. No real signs to locate the ground. Just a roughly painted piece of wood.

From the manager: Hi Laura thank you for your negative feedback We are a basic campsite On pitchup we are advertising as having portaloos The showers have plenty of space for changing over 2 feet I don't know whst is your problem with that The showers do work if you press the button a few times it will come out hot There are 3 well located signs on the road to the campsite it is just bizarre that you could not see them Pleanty of Happy campers been here Pleanty our coming back again Happy camping Richard I

From the manager: Thank you Kirsty for your lovely feedback I am really pleased that you had a good time at the Camping field I will put in a basin for next year so that campers can brush there and thank you for that Unfortunately the grass this autumn has grown a lot more than usual and it has been wet Hope to see you both soon Happy camping Richard

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
