  • Crackington, Trebarwith and Bude beaches within a 20-minute drive
  • A 50-minute drive to Padstow and an hour from the Eden Project
Watersports and walks, Thomas Hardy’s wife, ancient rock carvings and a museum of witchcraft… what haven’t they got at Wideacres Camping? Everyone will have wide smiles on this hilltop site above Boscastle in north Cornwall: it’s a spacious spot with room for everyone to stretch out and take in the views, the sea breezes and the sheer sense of glee that comes from being outdoors, up high, and beside the sea… The proprietors have thought hard about things that matter to their visitors: hot showers and clean facilities in the spacious washrooms and washing-up area for pots and pans, and a bar where you can pick up cool drinks. You can park where you stay and frazzle your bangers alfresco on a barbecue, and, so you know where to find the kids when the dinner’s ready, there’s a great playground for them right on site. The 16th-century harbour town of Boscastle is a five-minute drive away or a leisurely valley walk downhill (though bear in mind it’ll be uphill coming back). As well as being a very handsome spot, forever featuring in TV shows and films, it’s home to a decent spread of pubs and eateries and the fab Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location amazing for stargazing! Little bar open certain evenings, owners lovely, good size pitches. Good clean shower facilities (if being very picky could do with modernisation but always clean and wouldn't stop me from staying again.) Kids loves watching the cows and goats!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This campsite was absolutely amazing, the staff were lovely. The showers and toilets were clean and maintained throughout our stay. You could hire a fire pit at a really reasonable price and they had a bar with a pool table which was great for a nice cold drink on the evening, with wifi. They also offered Pizzas on selected evenings and it tasted delicious! There was a a little play park which kept the kids entertained and a place designed for washing up with running water which was great! We will definitely be returning!

Disliked: Said there was a communal fridge but it wasn’t too much of an issue, there was a freezer.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Everything. The facilities are great. The site is lovely and well kept. The owners are lovely and welcoming. Small bar on site opens 4 evenings a week and they now offer pizza s. Our kids are 8 and 12 and each time we have been they have made friends to play with. Boscastle only a 5 min drive. Bude 20 min drive. Beautiful beaches plenty of places to visit. Site has quiet time after 11pm till 7 I think.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: What a wonderful campsite in a glorious location. The pitch sizes are generous and the site is small and well laid out. The owners were really friendly and the check in was easy and smooth. All facilities were in good working order and I have to say the cleanest I’ve experienced during a camping trip. I would definitely stay again when I’m in north Cornwall.

Disliked: Really hard to pick something but our pitch was located opposite the child’s play area. This wasn’t a problem for us but could be for others without family and wanting to relax at the site as it could get noisy.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely clean site with sea views and the location is great for Boscastle and Bude amongst others. The facilities were good and clean ( although used all onboard facilities in the caravan ) and the hosts were very friendly. There was only two things that I felt could be better and that's the drinking water station needs to be re thought out as the area around the concrete step gets very muddy ( you are supposed to lift the barrel on to the step but not possible with our 50 litre one. ) and the other was the toilet waste disposal ( this was just a small shed with a normal ceramic toilet ) and this could be messy due to splash back. This I feel needs to be done like other campsites and have a proper disposal pit. These were minor things that I quickly adapted to, so overall a nice site and would recommend!

Disliked: None.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great value for money, indoor washing up area, clean toilets, very warm and powerful showers, lovely view. We didn't try the pizza or bar but did visit the nearby farmshop for breakfast. The little play area kept our kids entertained and toilets being in the middle meant never too far to walk.

Local attractions

Once Boscastle has cast its spell on you, you could conjour up a picnic and walk a short way on the famed South West Coast Path to Warren Point, for sandwiches with world-beating views. Or to immerse yourself in literary history, take the path from the site to the church at St Juliot, where Thomas Hardy met his future wife while doing a survey on the buildings. If you’ve caught the bug for big walks, you can carry on along the South West Coast Path a few hundred miles to Poole; alternatively, join it in Boscastle and ramble the locality taking in waterfalls at St Nectan’s Glen (10 minutes’ drive away) and the plunging gorge and Bronze Age rock carvings of Rocky Valley before winding up at secluded Bossiney Cove (15 minutes). Another cracking clifftop option is to walk to Tintagel (15 minutes by car) to see the castle and the medieval chapel up on Glebe Cliff. For beach days, it’s a 10-minute trip to Crackington, while Trebarwith and Bude with all its wind- and wave-powered watersports options are 20 minutes away. There’s more high-energy stuff on offer at Bideford’s Ultimate Activity Centre, an hour away, including stand-up paddleboarding, laser tag and assault courses. Staying at Wideacres, you’re well situated for day trips to the top Cornwall spots: Padstow’s harbour and seafood scene is a 50-minute drive, it’s an hour to the Eden Project, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are far from hard to find, an hour and 10 minutes away.
