  • Basic field camping with amazing views over Cornwall’s Tamar Valley
  • A 25-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; 45 to The Eden Project
  • Access to Kit Hill; café five minutes’ walk
Fancy a bit of real wild camping with glorious Cornish views? Summit Camping has well-prepared grass camping fields sheltered by Cornish hedges and trees – and what will the views be from your back-to-basics pitch? The Tamar Valley for starters, with the river glistening in the distance, as well as the Caradon Downs, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor National Park. There's direct access to Kit Hill Country Park from the site, where you can wander freely over four hundred acres (with a dog by your side if you wish), spotting wild ponies and birds of prey – and there’s even a freshwater quarry lake for a wild swim. You can pick up bits for the barbecue in Callington (five minutes’ drive) farm shops or do a major restock in Tavistock (20 minutes), with handy supermarkets as well as plenty of pubs, pasty shops and pizzerias if you want a rest from cooking. There's also a choice of smashing pubs within a ten-minute drive of the camping field – the sort of places you can find fab Cornish views along with real ale and occasional live music. Minimal facilities include gas-powered showers in the Shower Shed; please note there is no electricity on this site.

Liked: Ease of access, great view and clean facilities. Exactly as advertised. Kids had a great time and the view from the fire pit is quite special, especially first thing.

Disliked: Signage is only visible from one direction. We missed it, as came from the other way.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the kind review, we are so pleased that you had a good time and enjoyed the site. We are working on better signage and have added flags, the what3words does give the exact location to the field gate :)

Local attractions

The historians among you can seek out neolithic standing stones at Minions (20 minutes’ drive), and as the campsite is in Poldark Country, you can potter around the lonely ruins of Cornwall’s tin and copper mining heritage, including the old harbour and copper mine at Morwelham (15 minutes), or nose around the historic quay and working mill on National Trust-owned Cotehele House estate (10 minutes). Plymouth (30 minutes) is also steeped in history, and you can imagine Sir Francis Drake’s legendary bowls match on the Hoe or visit the ship that took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620 at the Mayflower Museum. Should the kids tire of all that history, take them to meet turtles and stingrays at National Marine Aquarium. Getting out into spectacular Cornish landscapes is pretty easy too. Walk up to Kit Hill Summit (10 minutes’ walk) right from the camping field, take on challenging hikes to distant tors in Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes) or lead the kids on a circular walk in forested Lydford Gorge (half an hour) to the dramatic waterfall.
