  • Peaceful Cornish site 10 minutes’ drive from scenic sandy beaches
  • A 10-minute drive from Helston and 25 minutes from Penzance
  • Famed Praa Sands and Flambards theme park within 15 minutes
Do your family’s demands for hols hinge on proximity to shopping towns, whizzing rides and pristine beaches? Tick everyone’s boxes with a visit to Wheal Vreagh Farm, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Helston. The site is about 15 minutes from the edge of the scenic Lizard peninsula, putting plenty of stellar beach options including Praa Sands and Porthleven within easy reach. Porthleven is the nearer of the two, less than 10 minutes away, and is a top spot for paddleboarding and sea kayaking; further afield, sandy stretches at Polurrian and Mullion (both 25 minutes) have fishing and watersports, Porthkerris is 35 minutes away for diving and shipwreck scouting, and Newquay and Sennen Cove are about 45 minutes from base if surfing appeals. For salt-free hours, make a high-octane day of it on the rides and coasters at Flambards Theme Park (10 minutes from the site), or opt for a day wandering the small shops and pretty streets of Helston, home to the famed Furry Dance. After busy days, make a welcome return to the peaceful site, where unwinding and switching off is a simple matter of grilling up dinner on the barbie and basking in the quiet of the green and spacious grassy fields. Best of all? A washing-up area and launderette on-site mean there’s no need to spend hols dreading the pile of work that will await upon your return home…

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Stunning site in a good location, impeccably clean toilets and showers, owners very friendly and accommodating, we had pitches 5 and 6 and the pitch sizes are huge, WiFi throughout the site is good. Could not be happier with our stay, thank you.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Brilliant site, sub-divided so more privacy. Mark and Annette were very welcoming and helpful when we arrived. Ablutions were top-notch. Will definitely go back there if we are in the area again. We did a lot of driving and siteseeing and Wheal Vreagh was perfectly located for this.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The pitches were very spacious and the site was super quiet despite most pitches being occupied. The facilities block was modern and spotlessly clean. The Site owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.

Disliked: A number of young children playing ball games on/around pitches but no designated area on site for them to do so which disrupted our own quiet time on occasion.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a warm welcome and felt at ease and relaxed as soon as we arrived. We were shown to our pitch and given instructions and guidance and then left to enjoy our break. The toilets and cleaning block were really well maintained and showers were hot and powerful. There was a good amount of space deliberately left in front of the pitches to allow for the children to play, which was perfect, and each pitch had a brilliant sized picnic table to use. (I would recommend packing a mallet as some of the ground was a bit hard and it took some effort to get the tent pegs in - not a problem if you have a mallet to hand!) We stayed for 4 nights with a 12,14 & 15 year old - packed plenty of games to keep ourselves entertained and used the site as a base to explore the Lizard and far west Cornwall. There was a good mix of younger and older children as well as couples etc. There are a couple of large supermarkets not too far away and the site even allowed use of a fridge and freezer if required. I would definitely recommend Wheal Vreagh Farm.

Disliked: There was really nothing not to like about our stay - my only small note would be that there has clearly been a lot of investment made into the site and it looks great. The only thing that lets it down is the 'reception area' at check in, which didn't have the same high standard as the rest of the site. So if you were visiting don't be put off by the first impression - the owners and rest of the site are perfect.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Pristine site with very spacious pitches, every pitch has a picnic table which is a nice touch. Facilities are very modern and new and clean at all times. Large shared fridge freezer is available and there is a laundry room with washing machine and dryer for a small fee. The owners are friendly and welcoming and gave us lots of ideas for places to visit during our stay. Free wifi which was reliable. Great location. This is one of the best campsites we have stayed at and will be booking again for next year

Stargazey 2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Perfect location for travelling around to attractions, landmarks etc. Although very quiet and secluded, lots of restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets nearby (approx. 10 minute drive). Annette and Mark were sooo friendly and helpful with suggesting ideal things to do in the area with a 1 year old. Highly recommend Lappa Valley if you have young children, great day out. Stayed in the Stargazey hut for 1 week. Was everything we needed and more. Super comfy double bed. Lots of space in the hut. Welcome basket and information pack was very lovely and useful :) Fully equipped kitchenette, iron, ironing board, airer (all really useful things that we actually used and not many other sites think of, so thank you :)) The hut was sparkling clean and designed to a fabulous quality. Toilets and showers across the way, always spotlessly clean and fully stocked. On site laundry room, with washing machine and tumble dryer. Very useful and actually used this. Reasonably priced. Lots of lovely grass space for our little one to play on. We would highly recommend this site to anyone and shall be returning in the future.

Local attractions

A 10-minute drive from the coast and the South West Coast Path, the site is well placed for scenic rambles along wild Cornish coastline. Particularly spectacular views are to be had in and around Marazion, where a glance seaward casts eyes on the stunning St Michael’s Mount (reachable at low tide along a causeway from the mainland). That’s far from the only must-visit coastal spot hereabouts either: it’s a 45-minute drive to Land’s End, England’s most westerly point, for plenty of photo opps and a Cornish cream tea – that’s jam, then cream, people – before heading homeward. Keen historians may be drawn to the grandiosity of the ruined but sprawling Godolphin House and Gardens, five minutes away, while budding horticulturists should smell the roses at Glendurgan and Trebah gardens (35 minutes), Trewithian Gardens and the Eden Project (both about an hour). Town time can be spent wandering cobbled streets in pretty St Ives, exploring gardens, galleries and museums in Penzance (and boat trips to the Scilly Isles), or clambering around Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, all within about half an hour of the site.
