  • Wild camping on Bodmin Moor, a half-hour drive from surfing beaches
  • A 20-minute drive to Bodmin; 25 minutes to the South West Coast Path
  • No-frills site with pick-your-own peaceful riverside pitches
Part of a family-run working farm in north Cornwall, Tresmeake is a pop-up site with riverside pitches in peaceful meadows. This is back-to-basics wild camping (there are portable toilets on site, though) with rugged moorland views, yet you can be catching waves at Widemouth Bay in 30 minutes. As well as world-famous surfing beaches, there’s plenty to keep sporty families occupied here. Explore the moors on horseback, play a round of golf, or learn to sail a dinghy on the Camel Estuary. Cycling options cover everything from easy potters on country lanes to challenging mountain-biking trails, and if you have the odd rainy day, there’s an indoor pool in Tavistock. From the farm, you have direct access to the hilly Bodmin Moor, where cattle, sheep and ponies roam freely among rocky tors and ancient stone circles. It’s a demanding four-mile walk to Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, and long-distance hikers can be on the South West Coast Path at Boscastle in 25 minutes by car. Back at base, the sharp-eyed among you might spot kingfishers, herons or Canada geese along the banks of Penpont Water, or see elusive wild deer and foxes in the fields. You may even hear the call of the barn owl during the evening. And thanks to the lack of light pollution hereabouts, this is a great spot for stargazing on clear nights. Barbecues are allowed (bring your own) as long as they're off the ground. Sorting supplies is easy too, with a handy store in Altarnun (there are bigger supermarkets in Launceston). Don’t want to cook? Not a problem – there are Cornish ales and fresh seafood in the local pub, just a 10-minute stroll away.

Local attractions

First stop may well be north Cornwall’s surfing beaches. Newquay’s Fistral beach and Watergate Bay (both 45 minutes’ drive) are legendary for their consistent swells. You can also have a go at sailing on the Camel Estuary (45 minutes) or kayaking at Roadford Lake (30 minutes). Walkers and cyclists, there’s plenty for you too. Spectacular waterfalls feed into Lydford Gorge (35 minutes), and the family-friendly Camel Trail winds inland from Padstow (50 minutes) to Bodmin (20 minutes). The Bodmin Beast cycle route through Cardinham Woods (30 minutes) challenges mountain bikers with technical climbs and descents. Slow the pace to see rare flowers blooming in futuristic greenhouses at the eco-friendly Eden Project, or explore Tudor-era gardens at Cotehele House (both 40 minutes). Rewards the kids for good behaviour by pretending to be wizards for the day at mysterious Tintagel Castle (30 minutes), touring ghostly Bodmin Jail (25 minutes) or letting them loose on bumper cars at Trethorne Leisure Park (30 minutes). Adrenalin Quarry at Liskeard (30 minutes) offers double zip wires, cliff top swing, coasteering and axe throwing for those who like adrenalin adventures.
