  • No-frills rural Cornwall camping 16 miles from Plymouth
  • A 40-minute drive to the Eden Project; 15 minutes to southern beaches
  • Simple field pitches close to a hotel with bar, restaurant and gardens
Stay at Great Trethew Manor Camping and you’re all set up for leisurely meanders in gorgeous Cornish scenery. This is a down-to-earth campsite with wild pitches on hilly fields, and just a few frills thrown in, including plenty of parking on site and – here’s the probable winner – the historic Great Trethew Manor Hotel within a few minutes’ walk. Surrounded by 40 acres of gardens, the hotel is open for lunch and dinner, and there’s a kids’ menu too – so you can pop in for a locally brewed beer and a bar snack or book in for supper by the blazing log fire. With beamed ceilings and traditional flagstone floors, the place is a cosy retreat in winter; in summer, you can dine on the terrace or grill meats on a barbecue. Woodland paths, ornamental ponds and glorious views are all yours to explore. If you’re lucky, you might get to see foxes, squirrels or deer as well as pheasant and hawks. And of course, you’re bound to encounter the friendly peacocks roaming the grounds. Ponies are on hand if you fancy exploring locally on horseback; if you've got your sights set further afield, the site is in a great location just a mile off the A38 trunk road about 16 miles from Plymouth. It’s a smashing jumping-off point for discovering the beaches and big-hitting attractions of Devon and Cornwall.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Was a lovely campsite!! Myself and 2 year old absolutely loved staying here!! Seeing the peacocks free roaming was really lovely!! They came right up close and seemed very friendly (brilliant for taking photos, it’s like they’re used to it!!) such posers!! Would 110% be staying here again, even in a thunderstorm as that was incredible (I think because it was further away though, maybe not if it was right above us!!) would definitely recommend to other people and am already planning my next camping trip!! Pitch was really level with electric and water facilities with a nearby toilet/shower block too!! Staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome!! Didn’t have wifi but wasn’t expecting a campsite to have any if I’m totally honest!!

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Good views

Disliked: Dirty toilets with no hand-wash. Nobody to ask accept the chef. Poor Access to toilet block. Bad unmade road to site. Noisy traffic using campsite to the riding stables. A lot of money for what we got, more expensive that caravan and motor home club with clean facilities. Strange comings and goings, people sleeping in cars too. Very disappointing all around.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Toilets covered in cobwebs, dirt. Hotel seems to be used for contractors working in local area rather than tourists which mean the atmosphere in the hotel bar is definitely aimed at a very boisterous clientele and not at all suitable for families.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Not a lot! Apart from a beautiful tree and the peacocks

Disliked: Everything really never have I been more disappointed with a campsite in my life, it was a saga. The approach is a nightmare very angled bends and overhanging growing in bushes and trees ready to scrap your caravan no maintenance is happening. Signs to enter campsite is not very obvious, we ended up going up wrong lane very stressful. On arrival I walked to the hotel bar and was greeted with yeah just pitch wherever no asking for my name at all. I had booked for 5 nights. The sanitary amenities are truly dire and dilapidated as you can see from my photos the standard of cleaning very poor, worst ever I have seen. Having a shower was an experience I don't want to repeat the water came on and off the flow was intermittent and claustrophobic no where to place clothes just 2 plastic stick on hooks on back of door. There was building work going on site construction of cabins trucks coming in and out. We saw no designated gravel/grass pitches as advertised only grass you just park where you like ......which means you can as we did, get someone in an enormous motorhome come and park directly beside us, who proceeded to take out their tables and chairs feet away from us facing us. Rough slopey ground we plonked ourselves in the middle of what is basically a field. No shady sites No privacy between sites Much smaller than appears in their photos I assume taken with wide angle Very unpersonable It was so bad we had booked for 5 nights and left after 3 and took the loss at £35 per night its was very very overly priced. It is certainly a "no frills campsite"

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: The site is stunning, quiet and relaxing. It is quite possible to spend the whole time exploring the beautiful grounds. Nature is abundant with peacocks, rabbits, Squirrels, cats, insects, horses etc. We never got as far as finding the play area but the lake and Manor are breathtaking. There was plenty of areas for the kids to run and the amenities were clean, tidy and accessible. Phone signal was sparse but this was actually a good thing as it meant we were able to enjoy simpler things. We are already planning our next camping trip here.

Disliked: The peacocks made some very strange noises (it is mating season) and this can be until quite late into the evening and early in the morning. However, ear defenders and ear plugs reduce and eliminate this issue.

Local attractions

There’s masses to do around and about the campsite, with pony rides and fishing in the grounds of Great Trethew Manor Hotel, but a day out on the zipwires and go karts at Adrenalin Quarry (five minutes’ drive) is surely on the cards for the kids. Another Cornish big hitter is the Eden Project (40 minutes), where futuristic biospheres house an ever-changing landscape of flowers and plants. In less than 20 minutes, you’ll hit the spectacular Cornish coastline, where you can paddle in the sea off tiny coves and go crabbing in rockpools with the kids. Teens might like to catch a few surfing waves or take jetski safaris along the coastline. On more sedate days trips, you can feast on delicious seafood in the cute fishing village of Looe (15 minutes) or – further afield but worth the dramatic drive – stand on the southernmost tip of England at Land's End (an hour and 40 minutes).
