  • Scenic wild camping on not-for-profit Rame Peninsula heritage site
  • A 20-minute ferry ride from Plymouth, five minutes’ drive from beaches
  • Museum, gallery, visitor centre, café and general store on site
Settle in for historic and historical stays at Maker Camp, a family-friendly spot on a heritage site less than five minutes’ drive from the Cornish town of Millbrook. The site’s a real feel-good destination… Designed to be respectful of nature and conscious of its eco footprint, it takes camping back to basics by going electricity (and Elsan point) free. It’s also running under a not-for-profit set-up – every penny spent here is re-invested in the ancient monuments and listed barracks on site, so a lengthy stay is actually helping to preserve British heritage. There’s a gallery and museum on site, if getting to grips with the history of this spot appeals, but those interested in a more typical sea, sand and (hopefully) sun hol are well-served too – it’s about half an hour’s stroll (or five minutes’ drive) to the nearest beach, and there are plenty others up and down the coast. For days of unbridled nature, stick around site in hopes of spotting deer, owls and skylarks, or just to make the most of views over Cawsand Bay and towards the moors. When food beckons, there’s a café on site with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a general store – barbecues are also welcome, so self-catering is an option too.

Local attractions

History buffs lured in by the site’s heritage will have plenty else nearby to keep them entertained. Explore the 16th-century Mount Edgcumbe, 10 minutes’ drive away, where there’s some fab rare art on display in the house and gorgeous gardens with views over the sea, or venture further afield to the Lanhydrock House, Pencarrow House and the National Trust’s Cotehele, all within an hour. It’s also less than an hour to Bodmin Moor, famous in these parts for legends of King Arthur. Head in this direction to stumble upon Dozemary Pool, the final resting place of Excalibur, and to find Arthur’s Bed and King Arthur’s Hall – or just visit as it’s an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If sea breezes beckon, there’s lots to entice hereabouts: the site’s five minutes from the beaches, shops and pubs of the pretty seaside villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, and the famed South West Coast Path passes through the former if long-distance jaunts appeal. Fancy getting out on the waves? Be sure to ask the site team about kayaking, or claim a spot on the ferry from Cawsand to Plymouth. Of course, no trip to Cornwall is complete without a visit to Land’s End, England’s most westerly point – and no trip to Land’s End is complete without a photo in front of the famous sign and a pitstop for a Cornish cream tea.
