  • No-frills family camping in a Gover Valley agri-forest, mid Cornwall
  • A 35-minute drive to Bodmin Moor; 25 minutes to The Roseland Peninsula
  • Grass pitches in two acres of woodland with a nature hut and treehouse
Gather up the kids – and bring any dogs too – for a spot of no-frills camping set 10 minutes’ drive from St Austell in Cornwall. Gover Green Space is a pop-up site surrounded by the greenery of an agri-forest and community garden run by volunteers, with an abundance of wildlife to be spotted among trees young and old. Facilities are basic on the two-acre site – they stretch as far as compost toilets, showers and a washing-up area – and there is no electricity, so you’ll need to bring torches and batteries from home to find your way back to your pitch after dark. But then the whole idea here is to get people together for an experience in nature. The grass pitches are tucked away from each other, giving families the privacy to reconnect with each other, cook in the open air and learn new skills. There’s a nature hut for discovering more about all the local wildlife, a treehouse for kids to romp around in and a diddy sculpture trail of wooden animals to seek out around the site. Hens and ducks parade about the place at will, and their eggs are sold alongside the flowers grown in the gardens.

Liked: Lynn (did I get the spelling right?) was lovely and super helpful; the site was small but it's clear she cares about it deeply and wants it to be a place where people can come and enjoy nature and peace, from the local community as well as people travelling in. We had a perfect night despite the weather and can't wait to come back soon and see what she's done with the place next, it's only going to get better as more amenities get added!

Local attractions

Gover Green Space is set in a former Cornish tin-streaming valley. A stroll on Hensbarrow Moor (20 minutes’ drive) leads to many reminders of this historic craft, from the ruins of Littlejohns China Clay Pit (15 minutes) to the numerous mounds of vegetation-covered spoil heaps that dot the horizon. Find out more about the tin-mining industry in the museum at Wheal Martyn Clay Works (10 minutes). The site is also in the middle of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – a magnet for walkers and cyclists heading for the Neolithic moments and cairns on Bodmin Moor (35 minutes) or the dramatic cliffs and hidden coves along The Roseland Peninsula (25 minutes). Big-hitting Cornish attractions for a family day out include The Eden Project (20 minutes) and its exotic plantings in biomes and ever-changing art displays, or the enchanting Lost Gardens of Heligan, with waterside meanders and madcap sculptures to ramble around.
