  • Simple, family-run pop-up camping with views over the Camel estuary
  • A 15-minute drive to Padstow and 30 minutes to surfing beaches
  • Grass pitches near shops, pubs, restaurants and Camel Trail hiking
Higher Tregone Campsite is a pop-up site with a truly spectacular location overlooking north Cornwall’s Camel estuary. Set in a peaceful field on a fourth-generation family farm, you’ll find yourselves watching the ever-changing views of the river, with the busy harbour of Padstow and the gorgeous sandy beaches of Rock and Porthilly in the distance. As this is strictly wild camping, basic facilities include portable toilets and cold running mains water. Barbecues are allowed on site, and you’ll have to bring all the gear from home, but there’s a big supermarket for sourcing supplies near Wadebridge (10 minutes’ drive), and plenty of restaurants and takeaways there too. Out and about in all those winding Cornish lanes, you’ll also find plenty of cute pubs to keep you from starving. Of course, there’s some very fine dining along the estuary in Padstow (15 minutes) and in trendy Rock (25 minutes, or you can get the foot ferry across from Padstow). But back to all that fresh Cornish air. There’s direct access to the Camel Trail from the site, following a disused railway line and brilliant for family hikes or cycle rides. There's plenty of choice when it comes to beaches too – family-friendly Harlyn Bay (25 minutes' drive) is a favourite, as are Polzeath and Daymer Bay on the other side of the Camel estuary.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely gorgeous location, overlooking Padstow/Rock port towns. It wasn’t very busy, which meant it was blissfully quiet.

Disliked: The toilets were disgusting. We understand this is wild camping but the portaloos were just filthy and didn’t flush. The directions for where to camp were unclear as there was a distinct lack of signage. We had to move our tent after one night which was not ideal, (we camped in what turned out to be an exclusive field for one glamping tent only, but there was nothing to suggest we weren’t allowed to pitch there.) the communication was unfortunately not very good either. On arrival at around 2pm, because of the lack of signage, we tried to get in contact with the hosts to no avail. We were eventually woken up by a call back from them at 10:30pm, by which point we’d already pitched up.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The view was absolutely incredible, and only a half an hour walk to Padstow and a lovely boat taxi which took us to Rock. We arrived on a Thursday and we had the entire place to ourselves for the night. Fellow campers arrived at the week end who were lovely.

Disliked: The toilets weren’t the best but they did the job!

Liked: Lovely, peaceful place to camp out for a night or two. We loved the incredible views over the camel river (beautiful sunrise and sunset!) and that it was easy walking distance to Padstow. Facilities were basic but that makes it feel like wild camping. Would definitely come back.
