  • Wild camping on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Penzance
  • A 10-minute drive to both Marazion and Long Rock beach
  • Views of St Michael’s Mount; alpacas and donkeys in the fields
On Cornwall’s south-west coast, Trenoweth Farm and Camping has amazing views over St Michael’s Mount and the sea. This back-to-basics site on a working farm has two hilltop fields for wild camping, with one just for families travelling with their canine chums (and there’s a dog park too, to make them even more welcome). You’re welcome to befriend the rescue alpacas, donkeys, pigs and cows in surrounding fields (please keep your dogs in their dedicated area though). From the farm, you can hike down to Mounts Bay for dog walks along the beach, access the South West Coast Path from Marazion in less than 10 minutes, or discover pretty villages on a drive down windy country lanes. The walk across tidal Mounts Bay to St Michael’s Mount has to be top of the to-do list, and there’s plenty for sporty types too with kayaking, paddleboarding and beach rides all available close by. Seaside Marazion has lots of art galleries to browse, and anything you need in the way of shopping is available in Penzance’s handy supermarkets, less than a 10-minute drive away. With cafés selling Cornish pasties and plenty of traditional pubs nearby, you don’t need to worry about cooking, but back at base barbecues are allowed (bring your own). The site’s no-frills amenities include shower shacks and portable toilets, with wifi hotspots to keep screen-addicted types happy.

Local attractions

Entice your family away from the farm’s animals with a trip to historic St Michael’s Mount (10 minutes’ drive to the walkway). Check the tide timetable before crossing Mount’s Bay to potter around the castle and cliffside gardens. There’s always a ferry service back to dry land if you stay on the island longer than you should. Let the kids loose on sandy beaches, or treat experienced riders to a horseback gallop thorough the surf on Long Rock beach. Go surfing, paddleboarding and canoeing around the coastline, or pack a picnic and jump on the South West Coast Path for a day hiking headlands and discovering quiet coves. For less energetic trips, head for RSPB Marazion Marsh to spot herons and egrets from camouflaged hides. Stop by Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens to follow the contemporary art trail, and take home arty treasures or driftwood carvings from Marazion’s indie galleries. All of these are about 10 minutes away.

Salty Dog non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Wonderful views of St Michael's Mount. Very clean showers and toilets. Very welcoming and helpful owners

Disliked: The camping field is on a steep hillside, some pitches at the top have been flattened but not fully compacted so difficult to get tent pegs to stay in. Very long walk to the toilet (500 step round trip and we pitched near the gate). The water tap in the field only dribbles water but this may be because of the drought. The only access to the field is a heavy sprung farm gate which my 5 year old got caught by a couple of times. A style or small gate would have been so much better.

Salty Dog non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights and adored it. The site is so lovely and quiet, with beautiful views. The owner was very friendly and checked in on us in the heat, we felt very welcome. Neither of us drive and we found the site very accessible, we ended up walking everywhere and the site was a great base to come back to and relax, visit the pigs and donkeys and rest our legs! We will definitely be returning in the future.
